28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I haven't read the whole thread. Has anything been said about Jeff Goldblatt, Fox reporter, who was covering the story from inside N.O., on Canal street? When he was on the air last night, he mentioned the roaming gangs. Today there was no report from him from anywhere.

Anyone know anything?

I didn't deny there were bad ones in there. I said not to condemn everyone there because of them. The ones they showed are decent human beings who are helping each other out as best they can while watching their backs.

This is AT LEAST a factor of ten worse than the situation after all of those hurricanes, at least in N.O.

Many of these people are stranded in the middle of a huge cesspool, with no way to depart the area, with zero electricity, food ten feet underwater, and death all around them.

so do we tell these people in the hotel, that they can just go to hell and die? they had the initiative and resources to save themselves.

If my specualtion is accurate (that FEMA authority is the source of commanderring their convoy), the choice is betweenn letting them and the hotel manage their own evacuation, or submitting to the duly constituted authorities.

My vote is to let them handle it themselves, assuming there was a roadway out - FEMA should be biased to get people out of the city, not trying to hold 'em in.

I owe you an apology from the last thread. Another FReeper was kind enough to point out the sarcasm tag that accompanied your photo of the President's visit commemorate V-J Day, which I overlooked in my haste to catch up on recent events. I'm sorry.

If they can lift 5000 to 20000 sand bags they can try. That and roadway concrete barriers are what they are using to plug the breaches.

Thanks for the article about Memphis. We are expecting 20k to 30k more. They are all welcome. An aside, the Bishop for the Diocese of Memphis, Terry J. Steib, was in Bay St. Louis when all hell broke loose. He, along with several other bishops, were trapped at Divine World Seminary until yesterday. They got to Baton Rouge and are trying to get a flight out. My wife works at the diocesan office and told me he called and told them that there is no way to convey in words how bad it is. The photos and video is hard enough to view. There is no way to imagine what those poor souls are going through.

Prayers and support to those that was in harms way.

RummyChick, you made your point several times - every single person I have talked to who lost everything (and a tad less) in Mississippi has, indeed, expressed gratitude they are not experiencing the nightmare in NOLA.

However, to summarily write-off the complete and utter devastation that occurred to residents of Mississippi and Alabama is tunnel vision, and frankly, an insult.

Please help spread the word:

This rumor is circulating because the water began to rise before the hurricane actually hit. So the assumption was the levee was blown.

Here is what likely happened (it happened in my town a decade ago):

If the height of the water at the discharge point of the river is higher than the river, the river has no place to discharge TO. When that happens, the river begins to BACK UP, and it floods from the mouth BACKWARDS. So when the storm surge was building in the ocean, the Mississippi had no place to discharge to, so it began to back up... causing flooding to move UPRIVER. Most flooding due to storms moves DOWNRIVER, which is why they talk about the "crest" of the flood moving downriver.

Flooding that moves upriver is rarely predicted so it catches everyone off guard. And if water was rising in NO before the hurricane hit, it would be easy to see why someone thought the levee had been breached prematurely/intentionally.
