Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Olberman just made some comment a bit ago about how Condi Rice just got back to her office... after attending a comedy in NY. His passive-aggressive liberal anger just irritates beyond belief, even for someone who isn't exactly a Bush supporter like me.

Once again, the people in MS crying over losing their possessions should thank god that they are not in NO.

It is as simple as that. Anything else you want to interject into that post IS YOUR PROBLEM.

I kinda wish all the able-bodied people who are begging to be _______ (rescued, fed, etc.) would, instead, go to the levee breaks and start filling sand bags by hand to plug the levee.

I kinda wish that, instead of using valuable rescue/aid resources on able-bodied people, that the able-bodied people would become AID themselves.... become a good old-fashioned bucket-brigade with sand bags.... Start joining together as a community to help the situation.

Or am I asking too much?

Well, some are blaming Bush as well.

I don't think many, but I heard soundbites from people in NO and in Mississippi blaming the president for the slow response.

Good point about the shoes, if your shoes are ruined from wading in cruddy water they are dangerous if you have to run on pavement or levees to save someone or apprehend someone.

I'm sure this one is probably slower but I really don't have time to look through the last 10 hurricane threads. I've noticed in the amt. of time it takes to type a response, 20 responses get posted. At the height of the storm you could hardly afford to go to the bathroom. Although disasters are not good, FR tends to be the best at these times. I will check back to the last thread. Thanks.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds,

Finally, a breath of fresh air. A politician finally says something that makes sense.

Hastert is right--do NOT rebuild New Orleans as it is below sea level.

Did anybody catch Keith Oberman trashing Rice, Bush and everybody in the admin--he implied all could care less about what is going on. He noted Condi Rice was on vacation, crap like that. He failed to mention that the mayor is a major reason why lawlessness borke out.
