28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Shep clearly is too emotionally overcome to do his job. Would FOX please pull him now?
How very tragic....unable to independently act/think to protect oneself/live.
I did not say the person was ugly, or deformed or anything else. You are a newby and you need to get over youself. We use humor here, self deprecating and funny things about foibles of others, and if you were not such a greenhorn you would not be copping an attitude. I make fun about myself all the time as do most other freepers. Maybe when you sit back and lurk you will develop a freeper sense of humor. It really helps in stressful times such as now. I survived three Hurricanes last year and one TS and as most people did with humor and helping each other. You do what you want, I will retain my sense of humor and continue to help others keep theirs, with one exception.
Earlier today WWL reported that there were only 2500 people left in the superdome.
So Jackson gets up with an incompetent Governor and the CEO of Venezuela's oil company and complains about the price of oil? This left-wing propagandist and all-around phoney POS should get his dumb butt kicked.
Oh, she didn't get hot meals!
Thank you for your comment. I wish all Freepers thought like you. What we (some Freepers are) should be clamoring for is some real leadership to get this situation under control. It helps no one to whine and complain about the inevitable mobs that will arise when then the leaders showed no prepardness, no effective response, and people are struggling for their lives. It's a mute point. Mob rule is a given in that type of situation. It's up to the leaders to prevent it and to fix it. They did and continue to do nothing. Bush should fire everyone at FEMA and put the military in charge. They're obviously the only goverment organization that can do anything effectively these days. Leadership, discipline, and courage are what's needed. Sorry for my rant, but like you I had some things to get off of my chest.
Pay attention to the reports of the people inside the Superdome. They will be coming in droves in the near future.
I will say ONCE AGAIN. Those people in MS crying over losing their possessions should thank GOD they are not in NO.
Don't interject your ASSUMPTIONS into my post.
I noticed the clean clothes just like I noticed that Shep is clean shaven but claims to be one with these people.
at the same time reports are coming out that the tourist in there were being raped and beaten and may have been killed. www.nola.com
I wish they (MSM) would show more of the missions being flown from the ship, and more about the ships on the way.
It's becoming more like Iraq, in that they only show the bad stuff, and not much of the heroic stuff that's going on (although there is a little).
FEMA needs to watch more cable news.
OK.I hear that. A few drops of rainwater might save one at this point. Please forgive my conclusion jumping.
And you were a COP? sheesh
You said it all Howlin, you and PD hit homeruns today.
I say don't pull Shep. People need to see the scope of this disaster. If anyone one of us were in Shep's shoes, we would be the same way. Shep did show a dead body earlier; however, I feel that is justified b/c reality needs to be shown. Actually seeing a body hits hard compared to just hearing numbers of how many are dead.
To God be the glory.
A FReeper posted this notion quite some time ago, either on the last thread, or the one before it. Quite the braintrust around here--wish I could recall the FReeper who posted it.
