Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I saw that guy - he was claiming that the city gov. turned off the lights and the phones - I couldn't believe my ears

Yes, I had a problem hearing that also, after he was rescued. At least he didn't become a looter (we hope)...

Please don't flame me for asking, but have you noticed that many of these refugees from water filled NO are wearing what appears to be clean clothes?

I wish some of the northern states would offer to help with taking in some of the refugees. Maybe they have and I just have not heard about it.

I am sure you can count on the load balancing. The local nightly news in Central Illinois had a segment about a couple's 12 family members that are going to seek shelter here. I would venture to guess Chicago will be seeing some rather substantial inflows.

why should the truth be sanitized? like 9/11 was sanitized by not showing the people jumping from the towers. this caller OReilly just had on, is he lying? OK, I will admit that focusing only on the bad news and not mentioning the good news - is much like the media's coverage of iraq. but I still want to hear these stories.

He didn't get it - these people expect handouts and if they don't have things the way the want them then it's the cities fault or the gov's fault or whatever - I am hearing very few people say thank God I'm alive.

Very true; I remember when I lived in Southern CA, I had a very large emergency preparedness kit....consisting of water, blankets, medicinals, canned goods, flashlights, etc., in preparation for earthquake survival. I'm sure if I lived in a flood prone/hurricane area...I'd have taken those supplies with me and left....but, there will always be those who are unable to leave...for various reasons.

bump to Howlin's post and "In the outlying areas, help IS there. The people are NOT rioting; the people are NOT standing around waiting for somebody to help them; they are helping each other and working together; they are THANKFUL to be alive and thankful for the help they are getting."

bump to your 13 threads.

OK, even if I try to understand the looters' motivation... how do they think they are going to get this stuff out of the city? There will be no water or food left once they evacuate the citizenry. Doubt they let anyone on a bus carrying a plasma TV.

I totally agree with your post. Too many posters have been taking advantage of this tragedy to slam the victims and also politicians.

God bless and comfort the victims of this tragedy, ESPECIALLY those of the least means. They are the needy. How we treat them, 'the least of His brothers', is what matters..

"In the Homestead Tent City following Hurricane Andrew, there were two families per tent, or all women in one tent, all men in another. That was the official designation, anyway."

Why are we not hearing this as a suggestion on the news? After Andrew, other spaces were considered, but keeping the people as close as possible to home was made possible by this tent city, and it gave all the residents some sense of normalcy, however little it was.

On another note. FEMA head on CNN is saying they just found out about the Convention Center people today. I can only see this as the failure of the NO local officials to accurately see the ENTIRE situation.
