Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Jesse Jackson has arrived in Louisiana...

If they're alive with no fatalities, they came out ahead.

Things can *always* be replaced.

He just said there should be 500 buses ready for something like this. He said helicopters should have been available. He just said there should have been black Americans with President Bush and Clinton.

TOMORROW (9/3/05)...from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. items will be accepted at the DoubleTree Hotel in Roswell (behind the hotel). Volunteers are also needed to assist.

Due to the recent damages in Louisiana caused my Hurricane Katrina, Coastal Moving & Storage has volunteered to dispatch their Trucks to transport donated items such as those listed below for the victims who have either had major damages to their homes or have completely lost their homes. These trucks will be met in Louisiana by the Red Cross.

Water, Non Perishable Food Items, Baby Items, OTC Drugs, Cleaning Supplies, Toiletries, Feminine Supplies, Paper Products, Linen Items, First Aid Supplies, Batteries, Flashlights, etc.

Any donations that you can make to help those in need would be greatly appreciated. DoubleTree Hotel Atlanta/Roswell, located at 1075 Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell, has agreed to be a drop location for this effort. The Coastal Moving truck will pick up donations behind the hotel on Friday, 9/2/05 from 8am-10am and Saturday from 4p-6p. Volunteers are also needed to help load the trucks.

Can that airport support 30,000 refugess and still continue to function?

Won't need to; they're just staging at the airport -- sounds like they're shipping them out of there as fast as they can. The medical cases are being airlifted out, those that are well are headed for buses out to Texas, Georgia and elsewhere.

My wife has had a time of it with people showing up on her doorstep the last couple of days (she's a director for Fulton Co. DFCS).

DNC members are high-fiving each other as we speak.

They continue to marginalize themselves by not re-torting groups like the CBC.

I'm surprised that CNN isn't covering that Jack$on presser.
Indeed. I'm glad they're not.

He's now blaming global warming; going after the National Guard in Iraq instead of NOLA; pointing to the budget spent in Iraq...

He's tossing as many darts as he can...

........

Balloon liberal bubble heads shouldn't throw darts, it's the same as people who live in glass houses throwing rocks.

Supposedly the word is at AirAmerika that this is the last straw for Bush and Americans will not tolerate how badly he has handled this...

and that this will be his last week as POTUS---I guess they are thinking that since Congress will be back next week, they will start impeachment proceedings over his horrid performance on this Hurricane...

I have heard it a couple of times today...

Oh yikes - I am so sorry that your mother is just like mine. I try to get her to listen to reason and facts but she will have none of it. It's exasperating, isn't it? I have not hung up on her as my daddy would rise up out of his grave and take me to the woodshed. But he did teach me to speak my mind - just better not be disrespectful to my mom no matter what.

That MISS and Alabama are okay, LA is not, and there is a reason for that.

Exactly.

And I wonder if others in this country are getting to the point where I am fast getting - tired of the media, tired of the race pimps, and tired of blaming anybody except the right people.

The fact that the left is taking JOY in this situation for their own political benefit is just stunning.

I was very busy last weekend, but I understand that President Bush declared the whole area an emergency area last weekend, before Katrina even struck, so FEMA would have the authority to pre-position supplies. I understand, further, that has never been done before.

You might want to check these, and EMail that to your mom.

Not even Clintoon, the perfect president, ever did that.

Of course, like 9/11 - the poor baby never had the chance...

From: http://www.fema.gov/library/df_7.shtm

#

# Hurricanes and typhoons were the most costly of the 1990s weather-related events, for which FEMA has currently obligated more than $7.78 billion. A total of 88 declarations were issued for these storms, including a single-year record of 19 in 1999.

# Included in those costs were $2.5 billion for Hurricane Georges in 1998; $1.8 billion for Hurricane Andrew in 1992; $725.7 million for Hurricane Floyd in1999; $623.1 million for Hurricane Fran in1996; and $491.3 million for Hurricane Marilyn in 1995.

Imagine: This hurricane at a presently estimated over $50Billion cost of damage, will likely cost FEMA multiple times the cost of the whole 1990-1999 decade!
