28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

"Hey DU lurkers. They just showed on FNC your favorite repug.....Karl Rove! It's Rovian I tell ya!"

I haven't even drifted to DU in a month. Don't even tempt me to see what they are spewing... of course..... don't tempt me, don't tempt me...

"The Black Caucus and the NAACP will portray state and local officials as the victims, who cried out for help while Bush was on vacation and did nothing.
You'll see little halos over the Mayor and the Gub'nor after this boils down. Halos of innocent grief. And race cards by the truckload will be dumped on the WH lawn."

This is so wrong.

His filthy rants don't help anything.

You are certainly right, GOP_Proud. Maybe he is de jure mayor but de facto Chief of Filthy Rants.

Awesome for New Orleans....Geraldo is there welcoming the convoy. When is he going to tear off his glasses and rip open his shirt to reveal the Superman insignia?!

Anybody watching CNN or MSNBC? I've noticed the tone of reporting on Fox has changed dramatically since this morning, to quite hopeful, almost awestruck by the massive response (8-mile convoy). I was just wondering if the tone has changed on the other nets.

No mention on CNN or PMSNBC on the convoy.

All 3 nets have gone to Pres. Bush in Mobile, getting a camera-friendly briefing from FEMA.

You can imagine DU, KOS, Buttsplash etc. Don't bother, they are rending their garments and shaving their heads.

WDSU just reported that 15 airlines are going to be transporting 25,000 refugees from Louis Armstrong International near NO to Lackland(sp?) AFB near San Antonio, TX

That makes a lot more sense. Tying up buses in a round trip to Houston is pretty inefficient use of resources. Better to use a short loop to get the people out quickly, broken into smaller controllable groups, and set up an air bridge to the relief centers. Meanwhile you can get them fed and watered at the staging area. Jeez, I hope this is what they are doing.

I just got this email from my brother (retired Army Sgt. Major)

NOTE: FROM EVERYTHING I'VE SEEN SO FAR, THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON THAT SHOULD BE LEARNED FROM THIS ONGOING DISASTER IS THE FAILURE TO PLAN FOR THE WORST CASE SCENARIO AND PRIMARILY IN HOW THEY COULD COMMUNICATE WITHOUT ELECTRICITY. ALMOST EVERY EXCUSE I'VE HEARD FROM THOSE IN AUTHORITY ON THE GROUND, AS TO WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THIS OR THAT WAS BLAMED ON INABILITY TO COMMUNICATE AND COORDINATE DUE TO THE PHONE AND CELL PHONES BEING DOWN AND OUT OF SERVICE. DUH!....WHAT DID THEY THINK WOULD HAPPEN WITH NO ELECTRICITY! IN THE FUTURE, FOR ALL POTENTIAL DISASTERS LIKE THIS, INCLUDING A NUCLEAR DISASTER, PLANS MUST INCLUDE NUMEROUS AND REDUNDANT COMMUNICATIONS PLANS. ALL CITIES SHOULD HAVE MILITARY TYPE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS AS A MINUMUM. SURE, THERE IS ALOT MORE THAT NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED, BUT FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN SO FAR THIS IS THE MOST CRITICAL.

Am I getting the impression that Bush doesn't appear very pleased with Brown? I had hoped he'd fire the jerk on the spot.

There are many mercenaries that operate out of the United States. They just don't advertise themselves as such.

"Executive Protection," "Executive Recovery" are some of the euphemisms used to the industry. They're in the phone book in any major city.

From Interdictor (hopefully the convoy gets to him soon):

The City is ON FIRE
Teams Alpha and Bravo finished the medium range recon and there are 3 separate locations on fire. We have pictures coming shortly.

During the recon, I spoke to some Federal Marshalls and NOPD. Morale is LOW. Very low. They're not seeing the military presence they say they were promised. I told those guys they can't possibly imagine how much we (the world) appreciate their dedication. I asked what civil rights the citizens have and the US Marshalls looked at me like I just fell off the turnip truck and chuckled. I asked if citizens can have guns for protection and he said if someone thinks he needs a gun, he should have already evacuated. He also said they are setting the city on fire.

The NOPD wants to know where "the two active duty brigades" were that he says they were told were supposed to arrive today. When I asked him what he would want to tell the world, he said Everyone keeps talking about the military presence in the city, and then asked me," Do you see any military around here" in dusgust.

We reconned our roof also, to get a better view of the city and took... I hesitate to call them "amazing" pictures. My city... it has been punched in the face and is on the canvas being counted out.

And yes, that's smoke you see out of the windows. The city is under a haze from the fires. Smoke and ash are floating miles away from the fires.

I see you aren't willing to press Congress to change the Constitution or the laws that forbid the use of the military in this situation.

I won't vote for your option that the president disobey the law.

JPres. Bush meeting with Governor of Mississippi right now and getting a detailed briefing of what is being done on the ground. He's in some factory or transportation building getting the briefing as we speak.

FEMA: 90% of New Orleans is out of commission.

Now he's getting a briefing from the Alabama governor. He's working on semi-permanent housing for the refugees, and defended FEMA.

Now Mississippi gov up on the briefing line.
