28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Okay....last night I heard BOR talking to a rescuer about a woman and her mother (?) trapped somewhere. Did not get his name and came in during the end. From the question and answer I heard it seemed as if this rescuer was part of a volunteer group not connected to the official effort.

It may very well be there are groups which have formed (ex-military, etc) which have formed with one goal in mind.

Forget the bullshit (sorry!) & just go in and get them as situations are made known to them.

Therefore, what you have described seems credible.

sorry- just ranting... I think everyone is frustrated at the situation.. plus I really do not think we can put our arms around the magnitude of the whole thing.

I'll join you in your rant. The highs and lows we are seeing are making me dizzy.

My bigger point, on the overpromising by politicians, is that it tends to make government bigger, which does not necessarily translate into "better" or "more effective."

OTOH, making promises does curry favor with the voters, and does translate into winning elections.

Very reliable.

After thinking and reading other posts, it must have been private security. they were very professional. The people were overjoyed.

In fact, "others" need to just push him aside, but, of course, there are things that can't be done because of PC.

I don't think we've seen very much of the mayor. What you suggest may have already been done.

The other night Bill O'Reilly has Bill Cowan on, the military expert. Bill had on a woman and her mom in her nineties that were trapped in the attic. Bill was promising them that he would send a private helicopter crew of "experts" who would come and eyeball their situation and then they would alert authorities or rescue them themselves. Never heard what happened but did not want to go into detail with Bill about who this people were.

That pic is testimony to the mayor's failure, those buses should have been used when NOLA was put on alert.

I just posted what I heard of that interview. I only caught the end, but it did sound as if someone had put a group together-not part of the official effort.

Thanks for filling in the blanks.

Get it through your skull: it is illegal for President Bush to usurp the clear authority of the governor in this situation, and use the U.S. military for law enforcement - that includes the Coast Guard.

If you don't like that, press Congress to change the Constitution, and the law.
