28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

MSM is gonna give the governor a pass, and she too will turn on Bush within 48 hours -- you can see it already.

The predictability of Democrats is astounding.

Let me correct my above:

"Then Ike will really *think* we're dysfunctional."

We as a collective group of FRiends are NOT dysfunctional.

They did that. All day the day before the storm came in and part of the day before that.

I hate to disagree, but it was clear on FOX NEWS that the inbound lanes were still inbound. Sheppard Smith drove right into New Orleans hours before the storm hit.

I-10 was NOT turned around early enough.

Plaquemine's Sheriff knows what he's doing. Wish I could say the same for the LE in NO. This is a situation where you have to be decisive, even when it comes down to "shoot to kill".

I was b*tching about bandwidth yesterday and the day before, probably sounding like a netnanny but since I took in coffee and DSL today, I feel so much better!

What right does the MSM have to complain?

On Monday they were all saying that NO was spared from the effects of Katrina.

Andy Card had better pass the word to Blanco and Miss Mary that if they don't stay on the President's team, he will give the area his benign neglect in future budgetary requests.

No he won't.

Your post was insulting to me.

Did you just hear President Bush, or you just want to ignore the fact he agrees with me???

OK then, you win the pissin' contest spectre. You and GWB are, in fact, on the same page .... now go away.

You're right. Both NY and Florida had strong leadership at the city and state level to direct the flow of relief efforts. Louisiana apparently has none of that and the Fed lacks the local knowledge required to be effective.

I've turned WWL off. I can't listen to it anymore. I can't believe that these liberals have their heads shoved so far up their butts that they are going to excuse Nagin and Blanco and blame this all on Bush. I'm dizzy from the unbelievably fast and furious partisan spin. These are the people that will learn nothing from history.

I don't care what Fox was showing you. ALL
of the outbound ways were out only the day before the storm, until late afternoon. They should have started it the morning of the day before, but until then, they didn't believe the storm was hitting.

New Orleans has the Causeway, I-10, across the River and airline highway to evacuate the city. They had it planned pretty well. If they had put it into effect 24 hours earlier, it might have saved more lives. If they had announced mandantory evacuation a day earlier, it would have helped.

If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets.

And hindsight is perfect.

They only went into high gear the day before the storm. part of the reason chaos reigns today.

Welcome to FreeRepublic, Uncle Ike! Guess I'll have to don my flame retardant underwear (not government issued), too, because I don't believe in a Fairy Godmother Federal Government magic wand either.

Hope you enjoy the FreeRepublic neighborhood!

Did anybody watch CNN this morning? I was wondering if Soledad had any explanation why CNN has been filiming the tragedy at the Convention Center the last three days, but never bothered to bring food and water to the crowd? does CNN lack the resources to help citizens in need? Do they beleive that only the government can help the people? Or do they know that by solving problems they reduce the ratings bonanza of exploiting the tragedy?

There are grounds for the use of regular troops. FEMA and Coast Guard personnel, who are Federal employees, are being hindered by snipers from their duties of rescuing people. In Little Rock, AR in 1957 and Oxford, MS in 1962, when mob violence and the recalcitrance of state officials prevented the enforcement of Federal court orders by Federal marshals. Both a Republican President (Eisenhower) and a Democratic one (Kennedy) sent in the regulars to ensure the safety of the marshals and the enforcement of court orders.

What worked then should work now. It is past time to hide under the covers of "the rule of law" and "states' rights", much less the phrase, "help is coming real soon". The looters and snipers must be suppressed without mercy, and the remaining population of New Orleans must be entirely and quickly evacuated under the strict supervision of the regular military and Federalized National Guard.

I agree, WWL's one big Bush bash. I had my wallet open to send money to NO this morning but It is closed to them now. I will send it to Gulf Port or Biloxi relief efforts.
