Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Bush takes a massive hit for this now. This is a historic failure at all levels. A moment in time lost, a moment that could have cemented the US back together, instead converted into a war, at home. Koolaid Kids better reach for the prozac, it is time for conservative, real ones, to stand up and retake the party from this fellow. Re-educate the people about what a real conservative because by the time Bush is done, a republican wont be electable as dogcatcher. Haley Barbour got it done. Minimal issues.
***** This gets worse, as the troops move in commencing a war to retake the city. Coming: innocent ones caught in the coming crossfire, the Big D "nobody cared because they are Black".

Count on it.
Bush has failed me, he has utterly lost me at this point. Worst case scenario, is a bitter split along the lines of Taft/Roosevelt, splitting the vote, handing it to Hillary. Perhaps Buchanan. Envision this, seperate yourself from Mr Bush, take back this party, or it will be done. I cannot overstate this. Bush is history. A sinking ship. Time to start putting it back together. Got to go to my job. Be glad to fight this out with you later.

There is blame to go around - but utter moral breakdown amongst the people is the cause - Americans are a free people, and when we can't take care of ourselves, when we turn on each other in the worst times of crisis - then no one can govern us well.

Dang. To think we live in an age where if you can't get instant solid fixes after a major distaster on a scale that we've never had before, it's the president's fault.

Dang. At the best it takes three to four days to get set up to deal with anything this big. But we're geared to instant fixes, so the reality of logistics doesn't count.

Dang. Because the governor of the state is stupid about using authority, it's now a republican failure.

Dang. Go back and look at past catastrophes in the US. But no, the MSM would rather push the country to civil war and use the backs of people who chose poorly and got stuck in a hellhole of city in part because they were afraid if they'd left people would steal their stuff (and with good reason), to do it on.

Just dang.

What we gonna do with the street thugs who don't want to leave - this is gonna get ugly whether we leave them there or let them out somewhere else - and already the buses are wandering full of dying refugees with the shelters in Houston at capacity - how many will die on the buses - the buses are sitting on the Astrodome parking lot full of desperate people - they are going to start dumping them on the streets . . .

I am reaching the point where I would tell people to get on their feet, and start walking if they want to get out, and then just cordon off the place, water and all, until the looters self-destruct.

"What we gonna do with the street thugs who don't want to leave "

I wouldn't worry about them -- dysentery, typhus, cholera, and other diseases will take care of them all in time.

Send'em to all the major blue cities, and let them care for them. Send extra loads to Berkeley, San Francisco and LA while you're at it. And don't forget New York and Detroit while you're at it.

Disease (typhoid, cholera, dysentery) will take care of any who don't want to leave sooner or later.
