28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Don't worry. We are hard at work to show this is all Clinton's fault.
My wife just called from the Houston area hospital where she works. They just received a patient from New Orleans who was rescued from a rooftop.
He said that other neighbors were throwing children into the water whenever a boat passed in the hope that it would force the boat to stop.
But the boats didn't stop and the kids drowned.
This is at least double hearsay, but I thought I'd pass it along.

Thanks for the good one sentence summary. Most people reporting under those circumstances would find it hard not to experience empathy and joy for the two parents amidst all the crap.

If you're talking about Jackson, I saw his interview on the online feed from WWL TV. He was supposed to be getting students out of Xavier Univ and some other schools.
For those who have broad band, the online feed from wwl tv is a fantastic source. I wouldn't say much more information, but different information, from local folks. Not too much repetition, and info from areas outside of NO that aren't getting the cable news coverage.
I thought it was sweet. I like it when there is some humanity.

6:28 P.M. - WASHINGTON (AP) -- Six truckloads of medical materials from the Strategic National Stockpile are headed to hurricane-stricken Louisiana and Mississippi, and 10 temporary hospitals should open at area military bases by Friday night.
The government said emergency medical shelters are being established at Fort Polk, La., the Mississippi Air National Guard Station in Jackson, Eglin Air Force Base near Pensacola, Fla., and the Naval Air Station in Meridian, Miss.
The shelters are in addition to one at Louisiana State.
You are very right. You see so many black faces cause New Orleans is predominantly black, good, bad and inbetween, and a lot of'em have been my friends. Dang, a lot of them come from families that have been middle class and literate longer than part of my scotch Irish family.
Most of those people being shipped out to TX are just folks. Mostly good, some indifferent, a few bad, who have just been through one of the most horrendous experiences you can have. They need our support, not our pigeonholing them as the bad guys cause bad guys mixed in with them and preyed upon them to make their hellish experience that much worse.
