28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Were the looters driving a cadillac? Someone stole all the cars off the lot of a cadillac dealers.
If they died not as result of some form of assault I would venture a guess that they are either elderly or very young. We are at the 3 day time period where dehydration effects start killing folks fast.
Al little excessive heat could kill someone quick who hadn't had enough water in these last few days.

CNN: Houston Fire Marshall ruled they can't put any more in the Astrodome. Houston policeman says conditions on the buses are a lot better than they were in the Superdome. Only one bus had an air conditioning outage. Those passengers were transferred to another bus. Policeman says the inbound buses are being routed "to other shelters and other cities".
Fire Marshall has declared that the Astrodome has reached it's maximum capacity in it's current state.
A guy and a 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, & 85 y/o woman. That's quite a few. Maybe the food was bad. I read earlier that the MRE suppliers send questionaaires and discontinue the one's the soldiers don't like. I hope NO didn't go cheap and buy the discontinued nasty one's :')

What about bulldozing the flooded homes and leaving the materials as fill then adding more fill to raise the areas well above the level of the lake? Is taht practical?

An infrequently cited constitutional power of the president provides an even broader basis for the president to use military forces in the context of homeland defense. This is the president’s inherent right and duty to preserve federal functions. In the past this has been recognized to authorize the president to preserve the freedom of navigable waterways and to put down armed insurrection. However, with the expansion of federal authority during this century into many areas formerly reserved to the states (transportation, commerce, education, civil rights) there is likewise an argument that the president’s power to preserve these “federal” functions has expanded as well. The use of federal troops in the South during the 1960s to preserve access to educational institutions for blacks was an exercise of this constitutional presidential authority.
Since the TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 67 > § 1385 of the US Code is a law passed by Congress, Congress can also choose to adopt a resolution altering it for any specific case.

Astrodome turned away a bus. They are NOT taking anymore people. This is horrible news for those who are at the Superdome.

Those ain't "piddly excuses" I've listed there, and before anyone tells me about the "can-do" reslience of this country you should realize that Texas went through a similar process after the Galveston hurricane in the early 1900s. Galveston waned considerably after that storm, and many of its residents and businesses sought "higher ground" in Houston. Galveston used to be a much bigger city in comparison to other cities in Texas than it is now.
That one does not look too threatening to the US at this point.
