28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Even Chrissy Matthews noted this on his show tonight.

They had a story from NO and a story from Biloxi.

The NO people were angry, the Biloxi people were grateful.

That being said, Biloxi has been easier to get aid into than NO, so that might account for the difference in attitude.

"I sourced my last "made up" assertion with regard to Thailand"

So you say the following..."Within four days, Boyce said, U.S. officials had set up a combined support force with 1,500 people from numerous government and nongovernmental organizations" supports your claim that "We got aid to thailand faster than this." And a single article claiming we secured 80% of Fallujah within 5 days (we were still taking casualties weeks later) supports your claim that it took less than 4 days to secure Fallujah? Are you kidding me? By your line of thinking a person could easily claim the rescue effort in New Orleans is nearly complete. I mean, we've got 20 times more men and equipment than we had in Thailand, and probably more than 90% of the city is free from violence. Sorry, but your logic and facts just don't hold much water.

No, I disagree...because we have seen much worse human disasters such as in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, or Kobe Japan, Hiroshima, Japan etc. where far more people died and far more destruction and chaos was visited, and the people did not turn on each other in this cruel way or freak out due to lack of a value system and social structure in place before their disaster.

The stone-aged types in the Indian Ocean islands acted in a far more civilized fashion.

Thirty? The lady I saw looked like a little old lady. Nonetheless, I think you are reading way too much into it. They probably haven't had any meals or were asked what they had been eating and she said "no hot meals" or something. Give people the benefit of the doubt.

We're obviously talking about two different people. My whiner said that she had nothing to eat for three days except for food from the Salvation Army.

DING, DING, DING! We have a winner! Willie Green will be the next Governor of Louisiana!

Cool! Louisiana could use a true conservative governor.
That would certainly piss off your friends at the Sierra Club, wouldn't it?
Now go peddle your toxic waste hysteria somewhere else.
Just stay out of the way and let the grownups clean up the mess.

Yes the MSM and the DNC got together for huge planning session on how to help in this national crisis and have formulated a new and improved plan to lead the country out of this mess!

They have decided to Blame Bush for everything.

Ain't that the truth.

I totally agree about people first. However if there are groups already down there or planning to go I think it reasonable that we alert them to this case. I think we are all feeling so helpless at this point that we will grasp at any tiny thing we can do to help.We certainly can't save them all but maybe we can save this one...

The SD did hold up during the hurricane - but if they had planned on it in advance, why wasn't it stocked? Even if people had only been there a couple of days (normal in a hurricane without flooding), they would have needed water and food and lots of Porta-Potties.

The judge who is running things in Houston was asked today how they had been able to get things set up so quickly, and he said "we had a plan." Obviously, NO didn't.

Living below sea level is something you can get away with for awhile - maybe even a couple hundred years, until the weather turns around and bites you. But you always know it's not going to last, and to refuse to consider this possibility amounts, IMHO, to criminal negligence.

Like the crazed gambler who keeps winning and going double for nothing.

"You people need to chill out. I saw this lady on TV that you are all trash talking and she was just a sweet talking, nice old lady about 85 years old who was just talking like any old grandmother...please. God help us."

-----

You need to chill. The woman I was referring to was in Houston, about 50+ years old, being interviewed at the Astrodome, about her narrow survivable experience at the Superdome and her cracker only unheated meal at the Superdome. Guess there could be more than one such person, maybe...?

It is a very sad thing, but most people have to have the hell scared out of them to convince them to get out. If Blanco and the Mayor had started getting people scared Friday night this would be a whole different ballgame. There are people that still would not leave, but a lot more would be alive if they have been more Alert and responsible. I heard many people say they thought they could weather this like they did the others, and they named all the ones they survived.

Well, I read a couple of months ago that New York still has many, many millions of $$$$$ left in it's 9/11 emergency fund....and the US Govt. is asking for it back...

But, of course Sens. Clinton and Schumer say they need it "in case" some people get sick years from now of some disease we don't know about yet...that they can attribute to 9/11....IOW..they ain't givin' it back!!!!
