28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

If the meals weren't heated, just place them on a black roof for a while. When I lived in NJ, the driveways would get so hot in the sun that you could burn your feet on them. Anyone who would turn down food is not really hungry.
That "entitlement thinking" cuts across a lot of spectrums: to wit -

Good! I don't live in NO and the only thing I know about it is what I have read here. However, a number of Freepers who do live in NO have remarked that the problem was that LA would not match the Federal funds, which is a requirement for that type of project.

True but that's just part of it. Their comms failed when the backup generator's supply of LNG was interupted by the flooding. The senior command seems to have bugged out, knowing the situation was untenable, evacuating with orders to those left behind "Do your jobs and everything will turn out fine". Whole stations, cars, computers, and weapons under water.
There's an understrength battalion of cops in there, and at absolute most one understrength brigade of guard in there, all told under 4000.
There are between 100,000 and 300,000 poeple left in the city. If one in ten is a gangbanger, desperate for food or water, heat crazed, scared, suffering withdrawal or need prescription meds, it a 2 to 1 force ratio.

In 90+-degree heat, with no air conditioning, a gallon per person per day isn't unreasonable.

I'm from N.O. and my sister who still lives in Lafayette said that they developed a massive hurricane preparation plan about 10 years ago. I can't imagine the situation if this had happened prior to 10 years ago and THE PLAN had not been developed yet.
She was also complaining about only being given water, water, water. Ticked me off. There are plenty of things that these folks can legitimately vent about. Being given water is not one of them.
I agree with you that some of the posters need to chill out.
I am becoming extremely offended by the repeated use of the term "welfare queen" in this thread. Thousands of women who were previously employed and self-sufficient are about to be forced onto the welfare ranks through no fault of their own. What's that old expression, "There but for the grace of God go I."
Please dial back some of this venomous language.
I drink more than that.
But in those conditions you could very well go through more than that. Remember no air conditioning and alot of folks are out in the sun and there is basically no transportation exertion makes you drink much more. Dehydration is a real concern!

A lot is going on down here that is not in the news. First, our esteemed governor and the mayor of NO are both idiots. This is the real reason for problems. Second, the NO police force is second only to the mafia in corruption and much of the looting and theft are coming from them as well as their lassitude in doing their job. Third, all Louisiana communities need clothes of any kind. See if your local Salvation Army will send to the shelters throughout the state and blog to give any clothes to the [Salvation] Army. You notice I did not say the Red Cross, they do not have a sizable presence here and are only fishing for money like after 9/11.
