The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.
Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."
Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."
Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.
He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.
One might ask how many innocent people they would have had to kill in order to get the bad guys. Perhaps, it was not worth the cost in innocent lives.
He was just informed, this afternoon, that there were 3000 people in the Convention Center. FEMA is likely getting the supplies there right now.
Was FEMA supposed to just know where all these people are? FEMA works through state and local governments. Where the hell is Kathleen Blanco? She ought to quit right now and hand her office over to a man, or at least somebody who doesn't cry every time they go on television.
Sad to hear. I posted that because I travel a lot, and have been there, done that. Can never overemphasize plan ahead. If things even start to look dicey, leave the area.
I'm assured of this because what he says is in direct contrast to what I've seen and heard from the scene. He's says the help is there. It is not.
"They are either there to save lives, or they are not."
They're just doing what all cops do, look after #1.
I guess they tried calling the mayor or governor and got put on hold...
The doctrine of Original Sin, if viewed as a scientific theory, would have a huge amount of evidence to support it. The behavior of the gangs in NO just adds to the mountain.
I thought you had no answer or you would not have made the first lame claim.
How can they get out?
Every means of leaving is gone, destroyed, closed or unavailable.
Just wait, it'll only get worse. The shackles of civilization are coming off and the taboos are being crossed. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if canabilism starts appearing as food starts running low.
I guess you're never seen a riot in Southern California or South Florida.
"...Doctor Norman McSwain says he and his colleagues at Charity Hospital have turned to The AP as a last resort. McSwain says he tried calling the mayor and the governor, using any inside pressure possible, to no avail..."
They need to drop in water, above all. Whether you approve of the behavior of these people or not, they are dying.
You're just being silly now.
Some of us who have been to 3rd world countries on various missions have never seen anything near this bad, not even close. I know, African countries in civil war would rival it, and a few other short-lived situations, but in general life in a 3rd world country is not one of wanton lawlessness. In fact, things can be quite neighborly when natural disasters occur which they frequently do.
No that isn't the case. They aren't dying en masse at the convention center. The same shuttles that take these people to vote on election day should've been there to help them get out of the city.
The reality is that people aren't dropping like flies. There have been herculean efforts made to preserve their lives and for you to portray it any other way is just dishonest hyperbole in the extreme. Shame on you.
Yeah, many are uncomfortable, but they are far, far away from eating eachother to stay alive.
It's typical of gangs and NO has plenty of gangs.
Or Newark, Detroit, DC, etc. In the late 60s, there was practically a riot every week.
