Former Presidents Bush, Clinton asked to raise cash for hurricane victims

WASHINGTON President Bush is asking his father and former President Bill Clinton to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The two have been raising money for victims of the tsunami that hit Asia in December. The former presidents plan to meet at the White House today with the current chief executive.

A White House spokesman also says President Bush will tour the damage zone tomorrow by helicopter and then will see some spots on the ground. The spokesman says Bush wanted to visit the area earlier but "didn't want to be disruptive of efforts on the ground."

I don't think a dime should be going to that area until the looting is stopped, the snipers are killed, and order is restored.

So the people in desperate need for water and food should NOT be given it because a few thugs are shooting?

And this makes sense to you??

In my opinion, it is a direct insult to each and every one of us who voted for Bush...

Kind of makes us look like idiots... He's giving a platform for WJC once again to look "presidential", while he makes himself look like the kid who's annoyed that his vacation was cut short.....

Where are his advisers? This makes Bush look like he can't be president all by himself... he has to call in the "adults"....UGHHHH! This REALLY angers me!!!

Do you mean his daddy?

I don't have anything against the private relief effort. But, now isn't the time to get into it. We can always deal with this after we have rescued the population, and dealt with the immediate crisis. The President's comments today show a poor sense of prioritization. We all know these people need help and when the dust settles I am sure that we will step up and help them.

AMEN. Too much politics and partisanship has partially led us to this point (i.e. not asking for help so as to saving face or score points). If the local, state, and federal government, regardless of who's a Democrat or who's a Republican, don't act in this disaster, we will be vulnerable to a major terrorist attack.

When the "dust settles" (or rather the water recedes), thousands may be dead. The time to have mobilized forces was before the hurricane hit. Maybe getting all those people out beforehand would have been smart.

Too late now, it's going to be a major mop-up... and I fear the political fallout from this isn't going to be pretty...

My thoughts also. Why does Bush have to ask Clinton, of all people, for help?

Why does Bush have to ask Clinton, of all people, for help?

Maybe because he can raise a lot of money for disaster relief? Maybe because he might get some of the a-holes on the left to stop the political attacks for now? Maybe because he and Bush Sr. present a bipartisan face at a time we need to be putting bipartisanship aside?

Yeah, but other than that, what does Clinton bring to the table? /sarcasm.

This isn't a time for bickering or sour grapes. Use Clinton like a rented mule if it helps out the refugees.

WTH is wrong with Bush that he keeps insinuating Clinton back into our lives at every turn?!!!!!

I was referring to help in the sense of private charitable donations to help them reestablish themselves. Obviously they need to be rescued first and right away. I hope we are not passing the hat to fund the rescue effort.

You misunderstand the hard life of a college teacher.

"Office hours" are when I sit in my office, and entertain students' questions and BS with them. Since it's the beginning of the semester, there's not much going on and no one comes to see me. But I still have to sit here from 1 PM to 4 PM every Tuesday and Thursday. (Normally, I'd be working on one of my book projects, but I don't feel like it, so there.)

Presently, it's 4:20 PM, past office hours, but I'm waiting for a phone call from the Mrs. We're going out to eat tonight, and I have to wait 'til she gets off work (she's a writer/editor, and has a late interview today).

Hard life, eh?

Right now, there are no Republicans or Democrats, only Americans.

Apparently there are quite a few people on this very thread who (disgustingly) prefer their personal politics over their country, and the needs of our people.

And I'll bet they're not Republicans either. They're FAR too 'pure' for that.

(Or they're trolls, disguising themselves as the right wing elitists).

These people don't want to work together. They want to set themselves above us all.

And it doesn't matter whether from the left, or the extreme right (who can tell the difference?). They put their own politics first, and the country a far second.

It nauseates me.

Okay, why don't you geniuses tell us exactly how the "good people" in these thug-controlled areas are going to get any necessities bought & paid for by your donations until the looters are put down and law & order is restored, hm?

Pouring money into thug-controlled regions only keeps the thugs well-supplied. I should think you all would have grasped that simple lesson after seeing it played out with long-misguided U.N. "relief efforts" across the globe.

GEEEeeeeeeee... what's up with this 'little situation.' - is not even funny anymore. So the old man is driving mom nuts around the house, so fine, use him to do something useful, but with BILL CLINTON????... Of all the human beings on earth, only Bill Clinton can raise money?... I guess we should be glad is not Jessy Jackson, or the other clown. Geeesss.

:)

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
An added benefit to the fact that they will raise an enormous amount of money.

In the first place, you don't know where the money raised will be going. There are plenty of needs in Mississippi and Alabama, and in parts of Louisiana not affected by the thugs, and plenty of places for the money to go even before the violence is controlled.

Saying that money should not be raised until the violence is quelled is ludicrous.

In the second place, the issues of violence are being addressed by the President and the Pentagon and local police, and may well be under control before the ex-Presidents even get on the road.

Disagreement with xlinton's politics and disgust with his slimy character are irrelevant to the fact that he is able to raise money, and money is NEEDED BY THESE PEOPLE, MOST OF WHOM ARE CAUSING NO TROUBLE.

How hard is that for you to understand??

Would you want to have water kept from you in time of great need just because you had a violent neighbor? I cannot believe the cold hearts on this forum.

No? Wasn't it said outright that it would be going to help the survivors in New Orleans?

Answer me that and we can continue from there.
