PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ernesta Drinker Ballard, a founding member of the National Organization for Women and horticulturist who helped build the Philadelphia Flower Show into a world-class event, has died. She was 85.
Ballard died of complications following a stroke on Aug. 11, her family said.
Heavily involved in feminist and civic causes, Ballard marched on Washington, lobbied for the Equal Rights Amendment, and raised money for female candidates.
She also was a founding member of the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, and was chairwoman of NARAL from 1989 to 1991.
Ballard closed a thriving horticultural business in 1964 to head the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and supervise its annual extravaganza, the Philadelphia Flower Show, expanding the organization from four employees to more than 100 staffers.

It had its good moments early on -- women did suffer some discrimination, particularly when it came to pay for the same work as men. Women also were not even considered for executive positions in many companies. But like a lot of these activist organizations, it went off the deep end. Now, it's a bunch of screaming women who sound like their pantyhose is on too tight.

She simply loved flowers.
Therefore, in lieu of killing beautiful blossoms for a memorial, she has requested that well-wishers festoon her grave with decorative bouquets of dead children.

The founding member of NOW, Betty Friedan, is somewhat embarrassed by the organization today which she meant as a conduit for normal everyday housewives but which she believes now to be nothing more then a lesbian advocacy group.
