Warning As Mobs Get Bolder
The New York Post ^ | September 1, 2005 | Kevin McGill

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor Ray Nagin ordered 1,500 police officers to leave their search-and-rescue mission last night and return to the streets to stop looting that has turned increasingly hostile as the city plunges deeper into chaos.

"They are starting to get closer to heavily populated areas — hotels, hospitals — and we're going to stop it right now," Nagin said.

The number of officers called off the search-and-rescue mission amounts to virtually the entire police force in New Orleans.

The out-of-control thievery had escalated while cops joined National Guardsmen in focusing on saving lives.

In some cases, New Orleans police officers took part in the looting. One cop was seen carting off a computer and a 27-inch flat-screen TV, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Earlier yesterday, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blan- co said she has asked the White House to send more people to help with evacuations and rescues, thereby freeing up National Guardsmen to stop looters.

The looting got worse as people brazenly ran- sacked stores for food, beer, clothing, appliances — and guns.

There have been some citizen-vs.-criminal standoffs, with one shopkeeper posting an ominous sign: "You loot, I shoot."

What we are seeing in NO is people born and bred in the welfare system. They have never worked for, or paid for, anything in their lives so how can we expect them to begin now?

I remember one clip where a very large black woman was outraged that FEMA hadn't given her a trailer yet. She felt she was entitled to a comfortable place to live immediately.

If FEMA does provide trailers for these people, the trailers will probably be much nicer that where they were living before and it will be almost impossible to get them to leave when the time comes. We will likely wind up with FEMA trailer cities where no one has a job and they all live off the public dole. This could wind up lasting for years.

Martial law and curfews.

A lot of people do not justify stealing...they just don't think the Lord thy God believes stealing warrants a death penalty.

Looting occurs due to the absence of law enforcement, riots occur with the presence of law enforcement.

Why does that ring hollow like a Kofi Annan ultimatum?

That's funny. Maybe Blanko could get the UN to pass some kind of resolution or something. Or write a letter about how all this looting makes them really mad.

THose guys on the ground in front of the mail truck had taken the truck to evacuate. The police let them go but they had to walk.

I just saw the photo on the MSNBC website in a series of photos.

You should have posted the photo of the guys in the small boat with the gun. They were going to their (or a in-law's) house to retreive valuables before the looter got there.

You need to check the law, my friend, anytime Martial Law is called, looters are to be shot, period.

No time outs, no "let's just all get along", no probation. It is a felony punishable by shooting the looters.

Examples? Taking food and water is something that we would all do in such a situation. Those are defensible. Has anyone on FR defended the other looting?

Watch out for the debate you are about to start. I told him that although stealing is always wrong, taking food or water in this type of situation can be justified and that shooting to kill the people who are stealing water or food is wrong. Here was his response:

"Pro-theft you are, and a zealous fan of the looters you remain. Simply disgusting."

What part of "Thou Shalt NOT Kill" do you not understand? If you think that stealing water/food is so wrong that someone should be shot for it, I think you need to spend some additional time on some of the other commandments as well.

Well, it's kinda like the situation in NO, if you think about it.

There's a time and a place to nip lawlessness in the bud. A choke point, if you will. For Cobb County, it was at the bridge over the river where any rioters would have to cross an open 200 foot long two-lane span in plain sight. For New Orleans, it was BEFORE the looters could get organized and get guns (and kevlar vests) out of looted Wal Marts and gun stores.

The mayor and governor have allowed the rioters to get past the point at which they could have most efficiently stopped them. It is going to get very messy now.

There was an article in our newspaper about the son of a local man stuck in Gulfport Miss. The son is a Navy seabee, with a wife and two small children. The father just received word wed. from his son Brian that they are safe. Brian lives in a military community-the neighbors have banded together to share meals, improve their immediate living conditions and keep looters from pillaging-(I assume they are armed). Brian told his father he is confident they will survive. "They're all watching each other's back." What a difference from New Orleans! They need troops on the ground immediately!!

I shot a rattler in my backyard last week. My oldest son wanted me to get a better gun. I said no.

I've changed my mind.

We have earthquakes here in San Diego. I think I'll get the better gun.

The commandment is "Thou shall not murder"

See other bible verses about defending one's home against thieves. Same concept, larger scale.

By allowing lawlessness, you encourage more. Do you think people are actually safer by police letting bands of looters run wild and arm themselves with stolen guns?

Don't tell hildy and the other soft on looting freepers. They'll probably accuse you of personal threats.
