Looter are armed gang situation worsening.
Dont get me wrong. MOst of the residents are good people. But, they should have nipped this in the bud early on. Now the rescue workers are being shot at. All I was saying is that if this behavior continues, there will be a backlash from the rest of the country and the donations will cut down. These lunatics are going to ruin it for the rest of your people there. Also, you know the news, if it bleeds it leads.
So, the police should check all bags to see if they've looted video games or milk? No, you really cannot allow any of it. I survived hurricane Betsy in 1965, and I didn't loot, and neither did my neighbors. We did, however, fear the roving gangs (not all of them even local--they came in from miles around to get in on the looting) of looters who would go into homes and take what they wanted, food, goods, or people (a neighbor was raped).
Like in the Sudan! People walked for miles and miles to get away from the murdering thugs.
"have the shots been coming from the crowds?
"
I don't know. My point is that helicopters with miniguns are not all that useful in an urban situation where most of the people there are not shooting at you.
This is not a war against an enemy that makes up the bulk of the population. This is a need to deal with individual looters or small groups...within a large population that needs assistance.
Broad measures to attack those attacking you are not the answer here. Specific enforcement is the answer.
I'm just tired of the calls for measures that will kill or injure innocent folks who are simply caught in a disaster. That is not how we do things here.
I have to believe the difference here in Oklahoma is that the cops would shoot but then we do have the late sleeper RAT Brad Henry as our Governor -- not exactly the pillar of someone with a backbone.
Henry would still be asleep if it happened here as he doesn't even schedule meetings in the morning as he gets up at noon!
It seems to me that only a racist operates from the presumption that race is relevant in behavior.
If you think it is relevant, I'd love to hear how. What is it about being a member of a certain race that makes them loot? I can't wait to hear it.
Has it ever occured to you that some of the business that have been looted are owned by blacks? Or that most of the people being robbed at gunpoint during this fiasco have also been black?
New tagline material.
who said anything about harming innocents here?
If you take fire, you have to fire back or else it will continue.
Our military WILL NOT fire into a crowd of people no matter what. This happens sometimes in Iraq.
My guess is that the Helicopters are taking fire in other sections of the city where there are NOT any victims but rather these seemingly organized roaming bands of morons.
Besides, a Pave Low can carry more than a Blackhawk can.
"Even during the tsunami in Southeast Asia, I don't remember them shooting at the helicopters"
Well actually I do recall a bit about an island tribe that threw spears and rocks at the helicopters. The Indian police withdrew figuring those folks were ok and didn't need any help....
It is domestic terrorism!
Amen -- but that's not the mentality of a good percentage of the population, as we're seeing in NO. I'm a Floridian too -- last year, hours after Frances hit, the local rag quoted someone in a hardly-affected area whining about the government not giving him food -- while people in some of the worst-hit areas were simply grateful to be have survived.
If the government's your nanny, you're gonna be sorely disappointed when nanny isn't there.
I don't mean to start a flame war buddy. I know what you are going through and have a pretty good idea of the sacrifices you are enduring where you are. Thank you for that.
The shots are coming from gangs who have stolen cars, guns, and postal vehicles from around the Super dome.
I am leaving shortly (the phone rang last night) to help out where I can. We will make this right. But calling for gun platforms to fire into the crowds is beneath you. It also give gasoline to our DU friends. OK?
Take care, and God bless.
report on Fox Jeff Goldblatt: buses were sent by the senate to pick up medical paitents and the busses were met with armed (police?) and busses were commandeered for phone company personell...??? help..I can't believe my ears..did anyone else hear this???
A) The water will never recede. It will just sit there until it gets pumped out.
B) If the looters wait for that, they won't be sparking fires, they'll be dead of dysentery, cholera, tetanus, and typhoid.. Not to mention the snakes and alligators..
you know I didn't say that.
If you take fire, you have to return it.
My guess is that they aren't taking fire from the crowds outside of the Super Dome.
Look at what happened yesterday in Iraq. Someone started a RUMOR, and they panicked. The people outside the Super Dome are desperate. If some moron was in their midst firing, they would have a riot right there.
Besides, Pave Lows can carry more than a Blackhawk can.
I agree with you. When this hurricane was predicted, I wondered if there was a reason why NO was to be the place for one of the largest hurricanes ever recorded. When I was in NO many years ago, I was struck with the evil. It's an interesting, historical city, but one that has more than its share of sheer evil. Yes, other places have it too, but I've never been anywhere that was so utterly filled with it. I've been praying that we would hear God's voice in this disaster.
Martial law. These thugs won't be laughing when the army and Marines open up on them.
"buses were sent by the senate to pick up medical paitents and the busses were met with armed (police?) and busses were commandeered for phone company personell"
I'd wait for confirmation. However, there is a distinct lack of coordination in this whole effort, it seems to me. This is partly due to poor communications in the region, but also partly due to stupidity.
Right now, the first priority is going to have to be to evacuate those left in the city. Each bus going to do that should enter the city full of bottled water, and leave full of people.
The rest of the fixing up can happen once the folks are out of there.
