After the Storm: The good, the bad, the let's-shoot-them-now

Katrina is a huge and historic story. The human cost, the financial cost, the rendering uninhabitable of a great and fabled American city--all of it amazing. A quick look at the good, the bad, and the let's-shoot-them-now.

• The governors. Political leadership in times of crisis is a delicate thing. You have to be frank about the fix you're in without being demoralizing. You have to seem confident without seeming out of touch with reality. You have to be human without indulging all your very human emotions. Rudy Giuliani set the modern standard on 9/11, and in a way that is not remarked upon. All his public statements were brilliantly specific. He told you exactly what resources were on their way to do what and where and why; he told you the No. 4 subway had been diverted west and then south until 11 a.m. Saturday; he told exactly which blocks were closed off and for how long; he told you New York would come back and then he told you why and how. His leadership was a masterpiece of specificity. That he had the facts at his command left people feeling: Thank God, someone's in charge, I can take care of me while he takes care of the city. That's what people want in a time of crisis.

2) Have your guns cleaned and in heavy-duty plastic bags with cleaning kits and plenty of panther-piss except for your carry weapons. (You should have already stocked ammo)
3) Canned goods and MRE's (Army/Navy stores). Ice ain't gonna happen so be ready to do without. People did for hundreds of thousands of years.

Great advice B U T, people cannot buy guns b/c the NCIC check is so busy no one can get thru...it's criminal!!!

People will die b/c of back ground checks, that's what's going on now!

Well said, she has been and will continue to be a failure of a governor.

I suspect she's got two days before GWB steps in and nationalizes the effort to bring the situation under control with federal troops.

The sooner the better.

Overseas the papers are all focused on the anarchy and looting rather than the tragedy.

Actually, not here in Britain, where it's been quite the opposite. They probably aren't devoting as much time to the story here as at home, but it's still the top story and there are very much focusing on the disaster (and SKY News covered Bush's speech yesterday evening).

Part of being prepared is already owning guns.

People will die b/c of back ground checks, that's what's going on now!

Part of being prepared is having a CHL so there is no background check. There is no background check in Texas on shotguns either.

I don't like the gun laws either, but I do what I can to stay out of jail.

But I bet you a dollar, you would have had the same stuff, packed up, loaded up in your vehicle(s), and been on your way out before it hit...

Absolutely. But I saw some interviews of people who had to stay because they had children recovering from emergency surgery. So even if you're prepared you might find yourself caught in a crisis situation.

When I was a young'un growing up in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba we had to ride out all the hurricanes. There wasn't anywhere to go. Ocean on three sides. Landmines and machine guns on the fourth side. We got hit by one hurricane three times. It kept doing a 180 and hit us again.

1) Videos of your kids growing up.

4) I have a 30 gallon plastic barrel for water, you should too.

5) Keep all vehicles full of fuel.

6) Batteries, batteries, batteries.

7) Police up all camping gear and have it prepacked.

8) Pre-arranged rally point with a backup rally point.

9) The squemish should prethink if they will shoot goblins or give up their families lives to them. I can skip step 9.

#1 I'm guilty here. But my wife mentioned that just this evening.

#2 Done.

#3 No MRE's, but plenty of freeze-dried backpack foods.

#4 Two 5 gals is all I got. I'll rethink that.

#5 Yep

#6 Yep

#7 Yep. Gotta refill on propane tanks. Used 'em up last week in the Smokies.

#8 Done, but needs to be revisited.

#9 In a heartbeat. And if I'd been caught unprepared, I'd have been one of the looters at the grocery.

I think I'm going to add a water decontamination kit to my supplies. That's a new one for me. Are the store bought ones better than a home spun kit (micropore filters, clorox, camp stove)?

Oh yeah. First aid kit. Always in my SUV, along with a good set of chains.

I think what your university & church are doing is wonderful. These people need any help we can give....I hope that they get so many offers that it will help lift their spirits & they will know that everyone wants to help.

I brought up what you both are doing today at the staff meeting of our non-profit animal shelter....we offered to shelter any animals that they can get up here to us in the NW & to try to assist in any way we can.
Will see what my parish is going to do for the people.

My wife was thinking about all the little doggies and pets today, and how if many of these are rescued, it is part of a family, and will make someone's day later on.

she has been and will continue to be a failure of a governor.

Her actions will only prove her incompetence to the country.

Watch and see.

The National Guard people are well trained. They understand the difference between food and CD players.

How many robbers, rapists, and roaming gangs of thugs have they killed in city called New Orleans?

Peggy is wonderful, and my favorite. But I can't agree about the media, at least not the last few days. At first, yes, they were very good. But now they are back to their bias, and helping the left convince the world that President Bush, and of course Iraq are to blame for the suffering of the victims. My neighbors are buying this lie. A group of them today I was with all were repeating this mantra.

Well I hope that they ask for donations to pay for live ammunition so that can shoot the robbers and rapists, because I'm really not interested in funding the perps ...

This is true...It is a sad situation...

But if there is another driver in the clan, better to load them up, and send them on their way to a pre-planned destination...

And hook back up with them afterwards...

Have a plan, but be flexible in it implementation...Always be rady to have a back-up to the back-up...

"Eaker's" a good troop to listen too as well...I see you've been conversing...Thats a good thing...

But I'm afraid if those orders of yours would have been made, a lot of the wrong people, along with the looters, would have been shot.

But that is not really the issue, and it would've been the right thing to do. This country needs more people (especially it's leaders) to stand up and have the courage to do the right thing. Would you sell out your country to save your own life?
