President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I haven't seen anything. No. Someone mentioned that CBS showed some bodies covered with white sheets. I read someone else's comment that Rick L. from FNC commented that he had seen a body.

Your contribution will be put to good use; we made a large contribution yesterday. We have supported the Salvation Army for many years for every disaster. They don't have the overhead of many organizations, they truly are very compassionate. A friend who is a fireman said they are the first to appear at every disaster but they never get any publicity.

54 (yikes!) years ago I lived in their residence for single women in NYC. It was an incredible bargain, the staff was just wonderful--like your own family. At Christmas they hung filled stockings on every door and their band played Christmas music. What a blessing they were and are!

(Maybe we're related) :)

My fear.. these same guys will get transported out to one of the shelters out of State and bring their trouble with them. Most are professional "Gangsta-types" -- you know, the rap culture.

Maybe there are some prisons or jails with extra space in Texas.

And how is it that "citizens walking with around with AK-47s" is a problem?

Because in our relatively disarmed society, the guys most likely to have the AK47's weren't normal CCW people, but criminals or near-criminals who had looted them and acquired an armed advantage over the law-abiding. Its an out of balance situation. These aren't Koreans defending their stores in CA. These are gangbangers and released jailbirds.

If the predominant carriers of the AK-47s (semi, no doubt) were normal citizens, law and order would be a lot better than it is now.

Gov. Perdue signed an executive order freezing prices because of evidence of price gouging.

(May have been posted, but just in case)

Coast Guard has been AWESOME! Those pictures of them going house to house to check for survivors from their helicopters has been nothing short of amazing.

The police were taking those things?

If you get the chance watch Keith Olberman's Countdown (2nd story, I think). They actually had a camera crew in Wal-Mart and caught two cops with a basket "shopping." They weren't looking for "survival gear." When asked what they were doing... they said they were "doing my job, looking for looters." The most surreal thing I think I've ever seen.

Hey people! Good folks are dying!

Are there any engineers on this thread that want to talk about lowering the water faster. I do. I don't care if you think I'm nuts ..... lets talk about it.

All the politics can wait until the dying is over.

I thought it might be up to $6 already. I'm no prognostic, but I think it likely to get worse before it gets better, if ever. I try to keep my tank full, seldom let it go below half.

It is up that far in some places. This is from Atlanta, GA.

"This is for Shep who doesn't believe there are federal people helping out."

I have been listening to Shep most of the day what I have been hearing him say is that (at the time of his report) no one is telling all those folks around him where to go. And no one was getting them any aide. THEN AFTER HIS REPORT help started arriving. and they got some of the worst cases out.

They were showing it on FOX and people standing in line for hours and then the supplies running out before they got through the line. This is over a million people in dire straights.

You didn't see that. It is all media lies. : )

Why not bust through the marshes blocking the LP outflow with a B52 attack (70 750# bombs) and get the city water down to sea level?

Do you know what that would do to the marsh birds? /sarc

Would it work?

What is being gained by seeing the devastation more than you
have seen already? What haven't you seen that is necessary
to provide assistance to those in the disaster area?

To: Howlin; Dog Gone

I came back from over in the Lake Charles area of LA a short time ago. While coming west on I-10 inside the Texas line maybe 10 miles from the La. line I met a large army convoy heading east into La [I suspect NG but not sure]. A short distance behind them was another convoy of maybe 10 US Coast Guard Pontoon boats maybe 30 ft long headed east. And then at a rest stop on I-10 there was a large group of military vehicles, Army maybe 75. Next came a line of Texas State Troopers [I estimate 30 vehicles] headed east bumper to bumper with their lights flashing. I don't think they could or would be going into LA.....

So my guess is they were headed to the state line getting ready to escort a group of evacuees out of the NO area that are headed to the Astrodome. Just a guess.

I've was on I-10 early today in the Houston area and there are now lots of movement headed east associated with rescue, portable generators to get large commercial structures some power, construction, people themselves in their vehicles with their belongings they brought, etc. Mobilizations is now beginning to appear but yet has a long way to go.

DG you maybe getting some influx to the Astrodome shortly.
