President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Wow! Ping for #106
>>>The looting, raping and pillaging would end if the power came back on. And I don't mean because they'd get fried in the water (though that might not be a problem). These folk would have to sit down and figure out how to use the DVD players, computers, TVs and other stuff they stole. Just a thought<<<
You are very bad! For a pastor, that is.
;)
We are seeing how corruption leads to incompetence.
Many don't have any water.....which is not being brought in, nor food.
Some have already died of dehydration on the I-10.
Are they actually "looting" or getting materials that would help in search, rescue & survival. They are allowed to do that. Maybe the witnesses didn't know.
We replied to that, saying they don't have to be focused in on, or they can blur out identifiable parts.
I saw that too it was amazing the contrast between that young man and some of the local official's responses.
I hope the adult's get in charge down there quick cause man there is some folks who are promoted way above their abilities in charge right now.
I know we are outraged by the looters but imagine you were one of those store owners who evacuated and then saw your store getting robbed on national TV.... maybe even recognizze some of the people ripping you off. Isn't there a Federal Reserve Bank in New Orleans????
I cried reading some of those desperate pleas, looking for family members.
And because everyone across the country is doing the same thing, we're now seeing shortages. But what can I say, I filled up yesterday with the tank only at half empty myself.
Several of my friends have commented on her looking frozen with fear when questioned, like a deer in the headlights. That is exactly right. She's so afraid of doing something wrong that she can't do anything right.
While men have such problems too, Blanco is female and IMO the public will associate Blanco's gender with such behavior rather than her being the usual incompetent political hack.
At least Mayor Schmitz of San Francisco rose to the occasion in 1906 - the City was grateful to him for his Rudi-like performance during and following the Great Earthquake and Fire, and rewarded him with further office (even a statue I think) even after his criminal conviction for corruption in office.
IMO Blanco will go down in history as the Governor who destroyed her state.
"whats the downside to declaring martial law? I can't understand why it isn't done. How bad does it have to get?"
Whooops:) Sorry bout that..
We were probably there at the country's request. (our ships may have been in the area) The fool governor & mayor took their good ole time asking for help. There is a protocol they must follow in asking for federal assistance & they didn't act on it.
Your toothpick example is nonsense and nowhere representative of the situation. Hwy 90 is one of only 2 routes out of the city. He gave her the exact address, stated he was near the superdome, and that people were walking across the river bridge out of New Orleans. There are only 2, and only one near downtown. It is ludicrous that the LA state police spokesperson wouldn't know where the evacuation pickup point was, if there were any, along that hwy 90 or near downtown New Orleans. That's what they get paid for. Evacuation pickup points(and there aren't anywhere near 250 organized one, also a ludicrous assertion) are the most important information to get out when the number 1 priority is evacuating the city. What's the point of going on TV and stating that there are evacuation points if you can't tell the people trying to get there where to go? There are 100,000 who have to be evacuated, and it would speed it up tremendously, and save lives (not a cliche this time) if most of them can walk to pickup points instead of waiting for limited crews to rescue them.
