President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
There was one store doing that I saw on the news, and it has not been looted largely as a result. People are getting fed, and the store survives.
LOL!!! That was good!
"I would bet that the President may have called personally to get that offer of the Astrodome."
Betcha you're right. Or had someone do it for him.
"Shep just said he was told by another FOX correspondent that citizens were seen walking around NO with AK 47's"
And how is it that "citizens walking with around with AK-47s" is a problem? I would think that a natural disaster with looting would be about the time people would want to do that.
Wow that's quite an offer from Japan, a country in need of its own oil is offering their strategic reserve...I have new respect for the Japanese.
And recovering from blasting the US to that Venezualan president.
WWL is reporting that the Coast Guard is going from rooftop to rooftop by helicopter, checking for people trapped inside.
Honestly, that was so sad, wasn't it? A woman's life partner, her husband, died at her feet, and she was asked to simply push him aside. I am not sure how it could have been handled better under the circumstances. But gosh, how sad.
Think about it---We don't want people seeing their dead relatives before official notification. That would be horrible.
I don't understand no water/food drops either...at the very least there should have been massive ATTEMPTS witnessed to do so by now.
I went shopping today and saw an entire Super Stop and Shop aisle full of water that is still sitting there tonight. You know, I'm going to call it and say I think it is obvious there is absolutely no good reason why a lot of water isn't being dropped regularly by now.
Here is an emergency with days notice...clearly we are not prepared well. I'm not saying whether we could or couldn't be, just observing the ugly and obvious. What if we had a different kind of emergency with NO notice?
I know the whole, sordid story. I can't imagine it has improved very much with time.
I believe that it was mentioned on these threads as early as Saturday that these buses would be most useful for evacuation duty. Unfortunately, the Mayor is not a freeper and so made no action to prepare for the worst.
Geez--leave the house for an hour, and there is big news.
If anyone has Phil Hendry on later - he is going off about the looters, and plenty else--including the media coverage. Definitely worth tuning in.
Thanks. The local people have been overwhelmed on top of having inept leadership IMHO.
I'm not even going to post what I'm thinking.
Thanks for that update.
Hi Trussell. Someone needs your help.
FMCDH(BITS)
There have been numerous airdrops around the city and on I-10 - reported by WWL and other sources. However, the people near the Superdome on I-10 could go back to SuperDome - there are now more supplies there, more airdrops.
guess it all depends on which "citizens" have the AK-47's
"Is her husband the Lt. Gov?"
