President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I agree...and hope DHS is still on the ball.
Police Sgt. Don Myers stands guard as food and water are distributed to residents in Gulfport.
Unbelievable what I miss when I leave for a bit. What happened/was said?? I see N.O. is coming under control - ADULTS ARE IN CHARGE? :)
I agree for the most part... save the historical district, it's on higher ground anyway. Of course it could be moot if the hooligans continue to set fire to the city.
I wonder if this may not be the proper solution.
Just start filling in that area till you make it higher than the lake and the river THEN build it back.
It may take years but it would be better than trying to beat Mother Nature with a levee system.
Thats nothing, people where I live are wondering why these people dont get online and let their families know that they are ok....some people are just truly stupid
A sign carries a warning in Pascagoula.
Of course! But . . . shouldn't they have just got a court order to send Katrina out to sea without doing any harm?
I have to tip my cap to the people of Long Beach.
We are talking New Orleans CHARITY hospital.. They know gunshot fire.
Barbara Tims looks at the damage to her kitchen in Gulfport.
Feeding stations have been set up now even in the Remote areas...
The problem in NO is the VIOLENCE! Until they get the streets back under control, they can't risk the rescuers lives. Too many have already died...
Troops are downtown, people are being evacuated by the thousands...
TONITE, the real battle of Mogadishu, err, I mean New Orleans begins...
The Chevron refinery in Pascagoula is flooded.
Isn't the Covention Center down by the river - near Riverwalk with those fine shops?
That may be what they are saying out loud, but the fact that the MSM is focusing their cameras primarily in NO speaks volumes.
I took that as part of carrying out a plan, where first the patient were relocated to facilities (at the airport) and now there is a need to get the medical pros, who are all gathered in one place, out there as well.
I think it's a fairly routine priority transfer.
I have no idea. That is why I am asking if anybody heard anything.
Destruction from Hurricane Katrina in Pascagoula.
Thank God. Tell them all to hang in there and that we are praying for them.
A ferry and shrimp boat sit grounded in Pascagoula.
