President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
She has been truly horrible. At best, she's acted like a victim herself. If people are rescued, it will be no thanks to her.
the way I see it, shep was spotting for the feds. I was NOT happy with the dodged bullet nonsense.
HE gets the 'most improved' award from me.
I have been in the Astrodome for baseball and football games but I would bet it will be first class for the people that are transported to Houston. That is what Texans do best!
Anyway, I said looters not taking food and essentials for survival should be shot. He was shocked.
They are interfering with the resuce effort. If I were running things, I'd drop some cobra helicopters in the dry area where all the looting is going on and set up a command post and order everyone else OUT. It makes me so mad I could spit. Once again, they aren't going to be able to do what needs to be done.
Can't believe I think they should be shot, but I do, and I don't care what their ethnicity is.
Then somebody on the radio way up north where I am suggested bringing them up here. No thanks. They will impact the already dwindling jobs, they will suck the welfare system dryer than it already is, and I don't want those looters here.
I don't mind taking in a fair share of family-oriented people, but we don't need any more drug addicts or sociopaths here. We have enough problem with all that as it is. We've also had civil disturbances that were unheard of in as little as 10 years ago on a regular basis that the police have difficulty dealing with. One came perilously close to getting a policman's gun who was down.
Oh, and there's an empty prison within driving distance, brand new and never been used. Somebody suggested FEMA putting them in there (they have the power to press it into service). What then?
I agree that the scope would be better recognized with bodies shown.
Radios... should be some radios out there.
Yep, communication has been one of the biggest problems in this mess. The National Guard or military should set something up that can cover the city.
Excellent idea.
We need to start a fund for our freeper friends that have lost things.
If I know how to help you, I will.
What????

State OES has learned that trapped victims on the Gulf Coast are calling family, friends, loved-ones, or anyone they can get a call out to in California asking for someone to rescue them. These requests need to go immediately to the US Coast Guard's Rescue Line at 800-323-7233 and immediate assistance will be sent.
Please distribute this information as widely as possible.
For all-states, alert.
Largest port how? Certainly not in volume.
"Only to those not paying attention."
Or anyone who watched the president's speech juxtaposed by images of people stranded on a highway w/out food and/or water or any idea what to do and without any fed or local official bothering to help them. I'll wager it is not at all clear to most of them
Malichi is so nice, he would probably drive himself and the "debris pickers" down there himself. And make firewood too. :o)
Phi Ka Mom has two stories mixed uped.
FEMA is bringing in the radios....
This SOB needs another phone call from the president to remind him of his priorities.
Until order is restored, the effectiveness of rescue operations will be limitted. Too bad police didn't shoot looters from day one--they wouldn't have had to shoot very many. The number of looters who would have had to have been shot to keep order would have likely been less than the number of people who will die as a consequence of the widespread lawlessness.
To Hell with these insidious Clinton people blaming Bush! What did the Clinton Administration do in eight years to solve New Orleans' flood problem?
I made my donation yesterday to the Salvation Army. I know my money will be spent on those who are in need right now. God bless everyone who donates money and time volunteeing to help these dear folks.
