President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Where is Nagin? THe city is under mob rule and nothing seems to be getting done about it. What about the people in that video who aren't at the Supderome (which means they can't leave in a bus), but who are not being helped? People are dying at the Superdome and officials like Nagin care more about the looting. WTF is going on with our leaders?

Don't forget Democrat governments in action also, they are doing such a good job. Do I really need to hit the sarcasm button here?

Unfortunately, much will be learned from this disastrous event.   No one will be able to hide from their responsibilities, nor should PC ism be allowed to enter into it!   It takes time to move in and take control of a disaster area this large.   Emergency response teams are getting their priorities in order and doing a good job. Nothing is perfect!!!

What's really amazing -- There has been ZERO international sympathy, support or offer of aid to the U.S.?

I think you vastly overestimate our significance. The threat of some bad guy listening in nil and the media can hear the scanners the same as us. This is PUBLIC, not private information.

Updates as they come in on Katrina

01:38 PM CDT on Thursday, September 1, 2005

Tom Planchet

1:37 P.M. - (AP): Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday that 1,400 National Guard troops per day are being sent in to control looting and lawlessness in New Orleans, quadrupling the regular police force in the city by the weekend.

Already, 2,800 National Guardsmen are in the city to help local police since Hurricane Katrina produced devastating floods in New Orleans, Chertoff said at a news conference with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Another 1,400 Guard troops and military police units are being added daily, he said.

1:32 P.M. - New Orleans Homeland Security Chief Terry Ebbert calls FEMA's response to Hurricane Katrina an embarrassment.

1:28 P.M. - WWL-TV's Dennis Woltering describes driving over the Crescent City Connection to go into town for an interview, and seeing the silhouette of the city as "eerie."

1:20 P.M. - (AP): South Carolina is sending 300 Army National Guard soldiers to Louisiana to help efforts to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

Guard spokesman Lieutenant Colonial Pete Brooks says officials have started assembling a military police company, a water purification company and a transport unit.

I'm listening to the same scan...IF ANYONE HAS A RADIO, WE NEED TO TELL THE RADIO OPERATORS TO STOP DISPATCHING INFORMATION ON TROOP/GOOD GUY MOVEMENTS..

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW WHY, IT'S BECAUSE THE BAD GUYS CAN HAVE SCANNERS TOO AND EITHER A) BE PREPARED WHEN THE TROOPS GET THERE OR B) PREPARE AN AMBUSH OR C) SCATTER BEFORE THEY'RE CAUGHT..

Nurse from the hospital just concluded a long phone call, live, with WWL and they promised to make calls and get her help.
Running out of generator fuel, many pts, staff took their families to the hospital so they could stay and care for pts.

Soon to be in the dark and begging for help. I hope this is why protection is being sent there.

Maybe now city governments everywhere will realize the absolute cancerous effects of gangs in communities. It is these types causing these problems now. They are no-good, worthless scum with no real humanity left in them when they are capable of doing what they are this sad situation. Rather that helping, they are still opportunistic shameless thugs and the more of them they get rid of now, the better.

They had plenty of warning from all the riots since 1964 and didn't learn anything
