President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

"Has the LA Governor done anything to permit the military to operate in a law enforcement capacity in New Orleans?"

I am not sure she can do that. She can call in the national guard but I think to get the Regular Military in there the President has to delcare Martial Law.

That is a step to be taken lightly, if memory serves that brings in all kinds of scenarios including all insurance is null and void after that point.

I had to miss some of the Homeland Security briefing.

Has the LA Governor done anything to permit the military to operate in a law enforcement capacity in New Orleans?

I don't know 'cause I don't have a TV & radio is off.

Just posted the Posse info because people keep screaming for the President to send in the armed forces.

That phone call was among the worst I have heard in my life. You could tell she was trying to be strong and professional and you could hear the cracking in her voice. When the woman reporter said to her "I am a mother too", I was crying. Such courage those people have, such honor and nobility, to stay on and care for sick people under those conditions.

Lord have mercy on these people.

Max pressure on a levee occurs when all the water is on one side.

True, but when the normally dry side of a levee is soaked, the integrity of the levee will be compromised."

Agreed.

I hadn't heard that about the girls. But we've been hearing about gunshots for days. People screaming.

It was clear rape and murder was happening. This cannot be permitted to go on. And if some innocent people die as a result of shooting looters, that's what war is all about. It's ugly and dirty.

Total disconnect between presser in D.C. and sight of our heroes running through the water on live TV to rescue LEO's under fire . . . this situation is OUT OF CONTROL . . .

This is for the 'minimal' survival, 'minimal' comfort of yourself, your loved ones. Think duffle bag...(AND to be prepared AHEAD of time)...at the ready. You're not to take the kitchen sink with you... ;)

Think of how so many backpackers fend for themselves for a much longer duration. You're not going to carry a full camp stove...just a hiking stove. Go to any sporting goods/out door store (think ProBass) and you can see the lightweigth/efficient/SMALL items.

for this reason we have been planning very closely for possibility of coordinated effort of NG to augment LEOs
over the next 3 days, the NG... will be deploying into NOLA a force the size of the NOLA PD each day every day for the next 3 days"

somewhere overlooking the canal near the Marriott.

Canal St. It's a major street that borders the FQ. I stayed there when I was in NO.

However, if the bad guys loot the guns and ammo, just who has the upper hand? Hmmm.

The thugs in NO were not that much o a problem until they became armed frm the looting. I'm not afraid of DVDs or TVs. Guns are another matter.

There should be a nationwide disaster law mandating that Wal-Mart and all gun sellers secure their inventory in storage crates to be locked and moved to police lots outside of the city, to prevent looting of weapons.

In the Superdome, along with separating the fit from the special needs population, I think they should have set up an emergency detox area for all the addicts who were hours away from drug/alcohol withdrawals, paranoia, panic and seizures so that they could be medically subdued to prevent violence against the medical personnel administering meds to the hospital evacuees.
