President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Donated to them yesterday and was very happy to see video last night of them already on site. I will be donating more after all the bills (mortage, loan, CC Bill) are paid.

You have made a most important point. Stopping looters and the violent has to come before rescuing all but the immediately at risk of death. Without that, the chaos and risk of violence works against all rescue operations.

When we were hit by Ivan, we were in shock for weeks. We needed to stay busy though. Our attitude was good and hopeful (we were TIRED). But then we had our HOME! These people have lost everything. Perhaps now they need food, water, emotional support, followed by work.

Which would just reinforce the theory that NO was full of criminals before the hurricane and what we are seeing didn't happen in NY, nor in Florida after the hurricanes last year.

My theory is that many innocent people legitimately could not evacuate (partly due to local gov't failure to recognize the severity of the hurricane), but that many of those that chose to stay did so intentionally. The criminal element, so to speak, knew they'd have a great time for looting if much of the city was evacuated.

So how will they get those folks out of there once the "innocent" have been evacuated. Should be interesting?

Maybe not, it wouldn't be the first time I did not know what I was talkling about. :-) My parents live in Panama City Beach and I have visited Eglin and Tyndall before, and I know how close they are to Gulfport - that's why I was wondering about them. That's all. Not intended to be a rant against the military.

A woman interviewed on Fox said she thought she needed mental help.

The reports last night from the first bus load sounded like people with Post traumatic stress syndrome. Perhaps they were more scared of the rival gang warfare in the Superdome than the hurricane.

FEMA has suspended rescuse operations because it's dangerous for them to go out there.

And the Mississippie National Guard is on the way home from Iraq!

I didn't question the entire fed response, in fact I just praised most of it as massive and amazing. It is the apparent lack of a sufficient military presence to maintain order that I question. But I should add the lack of communication to the masses wandering the area, too.

Of course the mayor and gov have dropped the ball, this is where the Pres steps in. If they weren't grant authority, publicize that, and the refusal would immediately back down. If you don't think people are questioning why there aren't more troops in there, perhaps its town to go down to the grocery store or coffeeshop and listen to the conversations. Until the rescue operations resume full-scale, those questions will increase.
