President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I would be concerned about Houston. Is there a chance they'll turn these people away?
That being the case, who is going to pick up thier tab for their welfare checks now? The state of Texas? Just curious.

starting turning up the heat on Blanco I say - start having FEMA and Chertoff go out there and start trash talking her for not use her state authority to restore civil order, and thus hampering the relief efforts. start right now, we need to tag someone with this - that someone is the dimwit Blanco.

The rule ranchers use to take care of predatory species that are protected by Federal statute should be done by the police and National Guard to take care of these biped predators: shoot, shovel, and shut up. (In New Orleans, shoot, let float, and shut up may be a better rule.) Just keep the reporters and their cameras holed up downtown and take care of business.
As do I... I would hope they ALL have better sense than that. I believe in this administration's ability to help these people recover from this.

Not at this point -- I'd suggest contacting the local Red Cross here, or perhaps your own church. Many of the churches I've heard about here are working through the Red Cross and the United Way.
Dunno exactly that the Secretary of State would contribute at this point.
Just be glad the flautists are not flouting the law!

The Judge in this case is not a jurist in the traditional sense. In Texas, the position of County Judge is actually the chairman of the County Commissioners, legally known as Commissioners' Court. A county judge, especially in a large urban county such as Harris County (Houston), is more of a county administrator than a presiding judge in a court of law. This position is often held by a non-lawyer, and, to my knowledge, does not have any traditional judicial authority. (someone with greater knowledge of Texas law can correct me on that)
As county judge of Harris County, Judge Eckels is chairman of the board that runs the Astrodome, as well as has a significant role in coordinating any disaster response in the Houston area.
