Katrina Live Thread XII

President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

It's 3.11 for regular in the Lehigh Valley of PA this morning - or at least it was this morning on the way in. Probably be more on my way home.

Per multiple sources, sea level +3', same as the lake.

We are clearly not getting the whole story. I don't know if the whole story can be "gotten" by the MSM. It's patchwork, and we need BS filters, but everything seems to be unfolding as even the second-hand accounts are saying.

The looters and violence being exhibited by the criminal element is because the good people have had hope taken away from them. Hope for a home to come back too, hope for the way of life they had, loss of hope.

That is BS. These people would behave this way 365/24 if the cops weren't around or the welfare checks stopped showing up. It's a lack of civility, not a lack of hope. To the thugs, this is their preferred 'way of life'. A shame the helpless have to be victimized as a result.

Have the three major broadcast networks gotten on board yet? We have a major national disater on our hands and their running reruns and the Tommy Lee show! What morons!

Let them be! If they start broadcasting more than updates, the Bush bashing will start there, too.

Running Tommy Lee reruns is a local decision. If the nets don't run soaps (the only daytime network offerings), you'll know they went wall-to-wall. Except for the NBC affiliate (which is still in the 1-hour-delay "Today" show), all my local stations in Milwaukee are running the usual shows (and you owe me an eye shower for the check). The ABC affiliate has been running a banner on the bottom of the screen for donations to the Red Cross, and the NBC affiliate also has an effort for that going.

I can't understand why it's going to take 5 days or more to rescue them!

I suspect that when word of this reaches officials, evacuation will become a priority. I hope so.

As for the looters, I think we need to send some Army Rangers in there to prosecute some search and destroy on the thugs.

I can't see a difference between these looters and the terrorists plaguing Baghdad. Some people just need killin'.

BTW, ladies, good morning to you.

"I saw that too - Nancy is a hardliner on law & order - it surprised me."

Pissed me off; CNN was in full-blown superiority mode, e.g., "If we can get here, why can't the government? . . . "we were faster to help the tsunami victims than our own Katrina victims [false, by the way]" etc.

Yes, I believe you are correct. They waited too long to issue evac orders, had no plan for moving large numbers of poor people without any means to move themselves OUT OF THE CITY, and rolled the dice that things wouldn't be that bad.

They knew that evacuating everyone was impossible to do in that short amount of time and they didn't want to be responsible for having busloads of people sitting in traffic on freeways when the storm hit.
