President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

As an aside, just found out most regular gas in Central PA now 2.99, some as high as 3.40+
Having just got off the phone with my son at Ft Campbell...I can tell you they feel like they're watching footage from Iraq..
Although it is mighty tempting - I am reminded that no good deed goes unpunished - I will give this serious and careful thought
And I will apologize in advance to you, FRiend. Just seeing too much of the tragedy is upsetting.
FRegards.
New levee breach? Huh? if both the lake and city water are in equilibrium, could that be the Mississippi if confirmed?
Placemark.
Oh WHY did I do that? I just dropped in on DU..Oh please! I was going to post a one time comment that would have gotten me banned for good, but couldn't get on because I've never used my sign up name/password.
Prob a good thing because I would have tossed my cookies on that one. They are all blaming Bush. All their threads start with his name, in vain I might add.
What typical idiots..Thank God for FR
I'm in NE PA & we're at 2.60 this morning
There people there who would behave this way at a drop of a hat, and have been since before crack became popular. But things really fell apart after that.
They are a bit more concentrated because they can't merge into the general population as well as they used to, because the population isn't there.
Have the three major broadcast networks gotten on board yet? We have a major national disater on our hands and their running reruns and the Tommy Lee show! What morons!
Well, yeah!
You'll get to see my p*ssed off side, too, I'm afraid.
I heard about the helicopters getting shot at during SD rescue ops, and about some thugs with guns on the tarmac. If we could send marksmen on the flights, we should drop these bastards like a bad habit. No quarter.
I'm not sure I would take anyone in now, yesterday I would have, but the way people have behaved, not sure I want that in my home. Sorry. I would take children and old people.
"To: Ellesu
Blackhawks landing at the SD now...armed soliders being dropped..."
Can you source this?
Betcha your 2.60 will be 3.00 by lunch hour.
Each of the three ran one-hour specials last night, but beyond that (and Nightline), the big three are ignoring the scope of it.
FYI - (video on FOX is not Live - this is from earlier this morning)
2nd set of 10 buses are moving in - they are waiting for the first 10 to get past the toll booth area.
My Freegards to your son and his buddies.
too early for MS...Maybe once the floodwaters come down from the Ohio River valley...but there are plenty of saturated levees. Some of them are acting like dams, and holding the water at a higher level and if one of those breached you would see rising water in other neighborhoods for a little bit.
My thoughts exactly
Kicking in doors at the Hyatt - not sure if it's the good guys or the bad guys . . .
