President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Just rinse and spit, hurry back
From what I heard about the Galveston hurricane, there was no firm, final death toll. I've heard numbers anywhere from 6,000 to 12,000 from that one.
Pennsylvania is sending 1500 troops today
Thread on FR now that many jazz luminaries haven't been heard from.

"To: All
Bus evacuations are set to proceed."
Per NBC live within the last 10 minutes: "Bus evacuations on indefinite hold."
What's the URL for the scanner again?
I think it was the chief of police on Charleston who told his officers that they didn't have a place to put looters and so the cops should just beat them up.
Has there been any estimate for the number of Japanese tourists through this?
Can't get there fast enough.
LOL! (looks like you have fans!)
yep. They were probably a bit busy to do a definite count. If you ever get to go to Galveston, be sure to stop by the museum set up for the Great Storm. When I went, they had a really wonderful slide show.
Bobby Jindall is a US Congressman from the NO suburbs who ran for governor against Blanco and lost by an eyelash -- mostly attributed, many believe, because he is of Indian (the country) decent.
He is a rising star in the GOP and, unlike most politicians, he is smart as Hell.
Think this will surpass Antietam (~23,000) as the single largest number of deaths in a single day on US soil?
re: Sorry, who is Bobby Jindall?
Bobby Jindal is the Republican congressman from the district in suburban New Orleans (Jefferson, St. Tammany parishes, etc.). He was narrowly defeated by Mrs. Blanco in the governor's race two years ago.
Oh man...bunch of the old timers lived in the areas that flooded deep (or they did when I last lived there.)
Crap....lost my streaming video/audio. I was watching the one through CBS news. Is any other any better than the rest?
Um, not unverifiable, though admittedly controversial:
