President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

informal thread contest...who will be the first Dem to call for a "Marshall plan" to rebuild New Orleans..
An opinion formed from neighbors who lived there and confirmed by quite a few comments on this very thread this morning. If you think I do not understand that people on this thread are actually from NO, you are misinformed.
Attempting to evac some on the buses . . .
More and more difficult to get to the buses . . .
"Walking plan" to the buses . . .
But not good from security point of view . . .
Success unsure . . .
per Steve Malzberg, Bill Sammon (sp?) will be a pool reporter when Bush visits the area tomorrow
Sorry, who is Bobby Jindall?
National Guard Compound secure . . .
We are NOT evacuating . . .
The one about the train?
Has Blanco given any interviews and if so, did they attack her or Landrioieoiur...I can't ever spell here dang last name...
Sweet.
keep listening and posting, thanx.
...I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done
Just got a call from my son at Ft. Campbell...he said this exactly like Iraq..and a lot of other things I won't repeat..he's heartbroken to see this HERE.
Haven't been able to go through the entire thread, but anybody know how many they got out of the SuperDome area so far?
FYI, overnight developments:
1. Scanner reports of clashes between police and looters, unconfirmed by major outlets. I won't give details because these are unconfirmed by other sources and we don't need rumors, but if true, things are degenerating rapidly.
2. CNN reports that a "renegade bus" showed up in Houston, details not yet available.
3. Scanner reports around 0200 that a Guardsman had been shot in the thigh at the dome, assailant chased into locker room. Story confirmed by FOX live about 30 minutes ago.
4. Current scanner reports as detailed in recent posts, NBC live reporting shots fired at choppers in the dome area, choppers not permitted to land, Guard command: "We cannot operate in this airspace, sending LE to try to regain control, on scene reporters say very little visible police presence, crowd becoming belligerent with reporters, fingers to the chest and shouts of "Get us out of here!"
5. Alleged NBC reports of a new levee breach, location unspecified, 700' long, however, neither of the links given led to a report containing this information.
Can I go brush my teeth? Back in 5.
written by by Steve Goodman, made famous by Arlo Guthrie...City of New Orleans ran from NO to Chicago.
