President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
He ought to send Jeb. I'm sure Florida would lend him for a few days. That's what needs to be done.
Why didn't every chopper have GET OUT NOW written on the sides of it ??
I do not know if this is God's judgement or not, but I do know that it rains on the just and the unjust.
I hope you don't think I think they are evil, :-(.
One heck of an earthquake swarm near Obsidian Butte, Ca today.
Thanks for the update. I'm just back from work and trying to get caught up. Maybe the external assistance is starting to arrive.
"The people need to get information like what Guillani did in NYC. No one is telling the people what is going on.
WHERE ARE THE LEADERS?"
Exactly right. Communication, just knowing what's going on, makes all the difference. Granted, a majority of the people in N.O. don't have TV reception right now, but as you pointed out, at least they could be making efforts to inform people concentrated in certain places, such as the Superdome. Or what about all the people on the freeway overpass? It boggles my mind that any emergency personnel there seem to be acting as independent operators, they have no orders from the top and were sort of wandering aimlessly themselves (i.e., the policeman Shep Smith tried to question). An entire day has gone by and not one person has come out there with a megaphone to tell those people their evacuation plan, or airdropped a pallet of bottled water. Surely that could have been done by now?
I know this is a disaster beyond anything we've experienced, but the leadership/message void is becoming more and more apparent, as is the absence of any large-scale disaster plan. It may have been impossible to carry out parts of a disaster plan due to the enormous impact on all of the city's resources, but it seems like at least certain aspects of that plan could have been put into motion by now, for instance, where were the airlifts of food, water and portable toilets into the Dome before today, if the Dome *was* the extent of the original disaster plan?
Damn fine essay, jeffers.
FL immediately sent crews Monday morning....and didnt find many people alive.
Hi rolling_stone, I guess it was the Mayor/Governor's decision when the water started rising . . . See post 279.
Thanks for helping clear that post up. I was DUmpster diving and noticed a thread comparing those two pics.
The DUmmies were trying to compare the "looting" term was being applied to people of color and the "finding" term was being used for others.
All the looters look the same to me. If you've got bread, water, food etc, I cannot see a problem. As far as I know the situation has not deteriorated to the level of people having to eat TVs yet.
Where is the New Orleans police.
The police explanation that were just here to save lives is wearing awful thin.
Now we know what could happen if a terrorist sets off a nuclear device coming across our Southern Border.
Helicopters have been tied up rescuing people; military is now there with the big trucks picking up people that have been stranded all over the city.
Coast Guard's primary mission right now is search and rescue. My question is How did Shep get there?
People forget that we truly only have a two hundred years, at most, of recorded weather history for this country. Then they try to make something horrible that happens now seem like the worst thing that has ever happened in the history of man. Nothing is put into perspective.
Yes, but if they are looking for a honcho, a been-there-done-that guy, then Jeb's your man.
Thanks for the clarification. I share your sentiments ... but even more fortunately not quite the disaster I was envisioning.
Excellent post.
Sorry...I should have used my "sarcasm" tag. No, I think that the LEFT thinks they are evil, and yet they are the ones saving lives.
My Bad
