President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

The nurses and Dr.s in NO hospitals need to be rescued soon. A Dr. on the radio said she and the staff are afraid for their lives. The thugs have looted the pharmacy and kitchen at the hospital. They have no water or food, patients are dying. She said they were told it would be 5-7 days before they would be rescued...Gangs with big weapons shot up their cars as they watched from the hospital, powerless to stop them. They stayed behind to help and now they have lost their vehicles and may lose their lives if not rescued soon....

Fema also came through fairly quickly on checking damage and alotting relief checks.
Also, some local banks offered small loans (ie. $2000) at extremely low interest.

Well then, the two reporters who were there in the middle of NO, and saw the wave of men in orange jumpsuits flow into the streets and bang on their cars were wrong, I guess.
Unfortunately EVERY major big city in the USA has a bountiful supply of the very same types
Sheesh......even here in 'Small-town, TX' our *supply* of criminals is growing.
That was what I was saying with lessons learned from this event. In reference to bank records etc., that's the whole point of disaster recovery plan (DRP).
Data processing facilities as a matter of practice [should] have such DRP procedures in place to take their data files to an alternate site and replicate what they need to run (e.g. payroll). These plans should be annually tested at a minimum. I am sure many dp managers are looking at their own DRP as we write.
If memory serves, ALL vital records (birth an death certificates) for the state of La. are kept in New Orleans for the past 80 or 90 years. How's that for an additonal mess? (statewide).

And the looters aren't going to be so eager to evacuate. Once the city has been evacuated of all that want to leave, I believe they'll be a remnant that don't want to leave.
It will be interesting to see how they go about completely evacuating the city.
I haven't read all the thread, but I have a question about pumping out the city. Suppose they do get the levees fixed in a few weeks, and then begin to pump the water out. Are they going to pump all that polluted water into the lake?
Cleanup of NO will be unlike any attempted cleanup after a hurricane, or even a tsunami. In other cities, runoff happens, and water recedes pretty rapidly, that's just not going to happen in NO.
A caller on the morning talk show in my local area said that after evacuation, they should blow the levees, let the water rise to it's natural level, and only recoup the property that sits above sea level, sort of a Venice of North America. Don't think that's doable (major pollution issues), but don't think rebuilding in a flood plane is doable either.
Wow, and of course a dp facilities' disaster recovery plan is of no use for source documents or records if they have not been moved off to digital format else where.

Documents could be scanned onto a disc and that disc placed in the emergency kit. Just an idea..
