President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Guy called in about 40 minutes on the scanner.
Asked about EMS availability.
Another guy mentioned about the special needs buses, and said they were almost finished.
The original guy something to the effect of 'We need to get it going; it's going to get ugly out here'.
To begin with he said something like 'Subject about start a riot at St. Bernard'. Didn't quite catch that part...
I hope I'm not the only one who heard that...
Fox running commercials . . . do any of the MSM's still have reporters on the ground? Fire should be on morning shows soon.
WILL SOMEONE START A NEW THREAD - THIS LONG THREAD IS KILLING MY CONNECT TO THE SCANNER (slowing it down) - then Ping me and the other who have the scanner on also.
The fire might be anywhere and may not be at the dome.
If your aunts from Purvis could get to my house, I'd be glad for them to stay here until their power gets turned on again. They told me it would be 3 weeks, but it was only 3 days. Hopefully your aunts have plenty of water to drink. They just need to sit still, fan themselves, and drink water -- sounds silly, but it really does help. If you want me to try to call someone to check on them, send me a Freepmail.
such bad news coming out of the Gulf/N.O.
Small fire in garbage chute near Gate A..apparently.
It could spread since they can't get to it to contain it.
No, the guardsman on the radio specifically said the fire is in the Superdome...
not good!
I heard that also.
Thank god I'm not the only one. Would have been about 5:45 CST or so.
I don't know if we've heard from him since.
When all is said and done, a lot [of us] will be examining this for lessons learned in terms of disaster planning. Things you normally don't think of (e.g. loss of important records)... such as last night I was listening on AM radio station from LA, around 10 cst, to education official from LA telling teachers from affected parrishes to report to other parrishes if they could, that they would work to restore their pay records, not to worry about loss of certification files, but just try to get back in and teach where and when possible.
If you're up and about....request has been made to start new thread...slowing downing dial-ups.....
Would it help if you set your preferences to say 20 instead of 100 or whatever it is set on? I had to set mine back as I am on dial up for time being.
Here in Central Fla. Fox news 35 is reporting that there may be rolling blackouts if people do not conserve energy. tThe power companies say their suppliers of fuel are operating at half capacity and replacing the fuel will take longer. Someone sent a bogus email out yesterday saying gas stations will close for 3 days and caused a run on the stations. Officials are telling everyone supplies are good now but not to do any extra driving around.

FoxNews - gunshots in SuperDome in last 1/2 hour . . .
Gun fire at the Super dome.
I was thinking about this this morning (loss of records)...but where would one put these documents? the banks (safe deposits) are gone...if not, unable to be located....where could one put records? if a whole town is gone?
I just don't know....what would/could one do for this kind of disaster...to keep records safe....but where would they be safe?
Why pray tell is a civilian cornered in the locker room shooting at the police? Does he want to stay there?
CNN says members of his "element" are there? Has some gang been wanting to take possession of the superdome?
Give it to them for what it is worth.
I am in the twinkie zone , cannot believe this.
