President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

thank you. Oddly enough, the top link web cam is giving me a view inside some type of operations room. Not an outdoor view.

No outdoor view because the city is dark - no electricity out there, hence nothing for the camera to capture. A lot of datacenters in NO are dark, and if this one didn't have fiber lines out of the city along apparently a safe route, they too would be dark.

What I watched today was a guy with a bettering ram breaking down a jewelry store door and when that failed they got a tractor with a scooper thing and used it.... they looted the gap in the Quarter and then set fire to the building and harassed the firemen trying to put the fire out...

I agree.

The pre-storm advice from Nagin and Blanco was shoddy

and now...it's pretty much the same

Blanco is sure no Iron Lady

and Nagin is no Guiliani

Orleans Parish is machine Dem....but...in all fairness....that doesn't matter right now...as far as compassion

You all can call me a racist if you want to, but the way these people are behaving is inexcusable.

Howlin, you're capable of a more complete worldview than that. The looters and riotous mobs are inexusable. But don't turn "these people" into the entire city of N.O.

"What if one of the WTC towers hadn't collapsed, and 3 days later most were still stuck in the tower, after having witnessed the other collapse, with no info, little food and water, fires still burning below, no idea when the rescuers would get to them?"

Well, I would hope those left inside wouldn't start pushing, shoving, stealing from each other, and attacking the people who were trying to rescue them.

The folks on the Titanic sang "Nearer, My God, to Thee."

What's the old saying, that character is who you are when no one is looking? The whole world is watching the tragedy in N.O. now, and I am horrified not only at the destruction and suffering but also at the crass and uncaring attitude of too many of that city's citizens toward their neighbors.

'Night. Didn't mean to stay up this late. :-)

To quote from an old Science Fiction story:

"How were we to know that their ... metabolisms were incapable of assimilating wholesome polystyrenes?"

Full Disclosure: A couple of more days of these conditions and they'd be GLAD to eat the electronics.

Prayers for all!

Idiot. I answered the question. What semi-competent criminal would continue the 600-mile trip in to the dome if they were liable to be arrested at arrival? Would not such criminal bail out, say, 1 block prior?

BUT...you can stay in my house if you don't have any annoying habits and are willing to work off your room and board by doing such-and-such." Trying to lay down groundrules to someone who has virtually nothing in common with you and has just gone through a hysterical tragedy of unprecedented proportion is a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

I missed that thread, thank goodness. Sounds like those types should go adopt a dog from the shelter... not human beings.

There are some sincere and kindhearted FReepers who have offered to take refugees into their homes in lieu of sending cash donations to the charities.

I'm in Texas, and there are folks here who have offered to do just that. Tonite on the San Antonio news, there was a woman from the red cross who is running one of the many shelters for refugees in the city who explained that shelters have security, medical assistance, and can handle special needs. She explained that well meaning folks who open their home to strangers open themselves to all kinds of financial and legal liability issues for the guests in their home.

I think her advice was quite sage. It would be horrible to open your home to the wrong kind of people who end up suing the pants off you because they slipped in the bathtub, or their child falls off your swing set and breaks his arm.

A few years ago, perhaps you remember, a ship at sea was sinking. The captain and the crew took a lifeboat and abandoned all the passengers. So, just is no telling what some will do.

Another sad thing is that us, the FReeper demographic, is probably the most generous demographic in America, the ones most likely to open our wallets and dig deep to help relief efforts . . . and right now, the way the criminal element in New Orleans has displayed itself, I don't think it's gonna happen . . . something is horribly wrong down there . . . and the good citizens, sadly, will bear the brundt of our wallets being closed . . .

Sure poor planning is bad.

In this case people suffered horribly and died from poor planning, including children.

Okay.....here I go, in with both feet:

What we are seeing these last few days is a direct result of that "the man puts me down," "the white man has opressed us" BS they get from their leaders. And they are almost encouraged to spit in the face of civil society -- don't think so? Look on TV.

They were having a GOOD TIME today; they are punks and hoods who have been coddled and protected for too long in that community:

----

From another thread.

John Carolan was sitting on his porch in the thick, humid darkness just before midnight Tuesday when three or four young men, one with a knife and another with a machete, stopped in front of his fence and pointed to the generator humming in the front yard, he said.

One said, "We want that generator," he recalled.

"I fired a couple of rounds over their heads with a .357 Magnum," Mr. Carolan recounted Wednesday. "They scattered."

He smiled and added, "You've heard of law west of the Pecos. This is law west of Canal Street."

---

As somebody said up the thread, there are people in New Orleans who are doing to DIE because the police are having to stop and take out the trash that is terrorizing New Orleans.
