President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

If THIS doesn't say it all about why things have fallen apart in NO!!!!
Looting: The police are looting. This has been confirmed by several independent sources. Some of the looting might be "legitimate" in as much as that word has any meaning in this context. They have broken into ATMs and safes: confirmed. We have eyewitnesses to this.
They have taken dozens of SUVs from dealerships ostensibly for official use. They have also looted gun stores and pawn shops for all the small arms, supposedly to prevent "criminals" from doing so. But who knows their true intentions.
We have an inside source in the NOPD who says that command and control is in chaos. He reports that command lapses more than 24 hours between check-ins, and that most of the force are "like deer in the headlights." NOPD already had a reputation for corruption, but I am telling you now that the people we've been talking to say they are not recognizing the NOPD as a legitimate authority anymore, since cops have been seen looting in Walmarts and forcing people out of stores so they could back up SUVs and loot them.
Howdy VJ...nite!
Um, the controversial and unverifiable claims of his original post wasn't from FOX, it was from an anonymous rescue source. That thread appears to have been pulled. I'm willing to bet the first post was the reason it was yanked, not anything broadcast on Fox.
same here.
What can I say......my understanding of God's ways is finite.
You still refuse to answer the questions. Why did the thief who helped steal a bus lie about being in the Superdome? Why did he say on national television that someone died there? He is a criminal and should be prosecuted, along with those looters who stole a bus.
A Fox reporter on O'Reilly tonight said that the police or somebody warned them to get out of NO because they were going to empty the jails.
As they were leaving their car was surrounded and they were threatened........it sounded horrific.
I just wondered if whatever happened on the bus might have been the prisoners.
You all can call me a racist if you want to, but the way these people are behaving is inexcusable.
And I'm tired of the "they don't know any better" excuse for them.
And I'd say the same thing if they were white trash from NC.
Um...... maybe this is a stupid question, but how do you steal a SUV from a dealership w/o the keys? Do they know where the keys are, or do they hotwire them?
Just asking.....
Once the store is broken wide open so anyone can take anything, the likelihood of anyone who needs emergency goods from the store actually receiving them drops to practically nil. Much better would be for an armed person in uniform to take control of the store and have someone hand out goods to people in need who seek them in orderly fashion. Otherwise free-for-alls will lead to chaos.
I've heard enough on the scanner and on local media interviews (streaming) to tell me that the threats/attacks on the Hospitals are very real, and are not over yet . . .
OK - the bus is something different. A busload of people have arrived in Houston who we aren't sure about where they came from.... except they aren't from the Superdome.
I feel the same way. Are these people better than the hospital patients they are killing due to the rioting and anarchy? Does a hurricane give you the right to turn into something sub-human?
You need to do a big OPUS thread first.
and then come back later like nothing ever happened ala like many freepers did after Schiavo
you can always go to Clown Posse.....they loathe...and I do mean loathe this forum
and they are pretty culturally sensitive

I Think when the REAL stories about what is happening there get out, this will spell DOOM for Democrats in 2006-2008. Democrats will GET YOU KILLED if we allow them to "Lead".
The absolute and utter incompetence, lack of planning and corruption is getting people KILLED...
Even the Mayor has bugged out!! Some "Leadership", eh?
hotwire
I guess I'll get called a racist, also, because I agree with you 100%.
they just had video on CNN of a healthy male in his late 20's trying to break into a bank's glass door with a metal bar. He was laughing while he looked at the camera...
i'm sure he was just lookin for baby milk.....
later gater
I'll buy that, but there were a few details in that post that need confirmation before reporting.
You are the most lucent - and admirable - here.
Good, thoughtful post. This is such an overwhelming situation, it is just hard to fully fathom the implications, with tough choices and some very gray areas. Imperfect decisions are inevitable, and injections of wisdom are very helpfuls as we try to cope and react.
