President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Fox just showed the evil military unloading water and food at the Superdome. Looked like a pretty efficient operation, too.
Shep just said he was told by another FOX correspondent that citizens were seen walking around NO with AK 47's
I thought I read one local AM was up & reporting on all frequencies
We had no problem doing that in the Berlin airlift back in 1947, a half a world away.
I am so sorry !!!!!
Bay St. Louis I know for a fact that the surge was far in excess of Camille. One family had built a new house with its foundation higher than the high water mark of Camille (nothing could ever be worse than Camille again) This new house flooded up to the ceiling.
Pass Christian--Reports said that no buildings stand in Pass Christian
Bridge between Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian gone
Some sports guy was on who's family had a house a mile north of I 10 behind Waveland/Bay St. Louis. They had water up to the attic.
If you pull a map of Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian up you will notice St. Louis Bay and Jordon River behind it. There is a good chance people in Waveland, Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian were washed toward the Bay. There were reports on another thread of large losses of life in this area and bodies floating. This was based on a coversation with a Freeper who was in contact with one of the recovery teams down there.
If you pull up a map of Bay
Great post, thanks
Sticking his nose in the face of people helped save a 5 day year old baby...if it lives. There was a photographer snapping as fast as he could that was in the way of the cop taking the 5 year old. he eventually put up his hands so the cop must have said something to him.
Nope. I don't consider food to be loot.
I'm not there and cdertainly the FEMA, Red Cross folks etc have been through this before, but I don't understand why LEO's ect cant provide some info..."try to get to such and such a point where there's a 'relay'station to get you to the next point." I also don't understand why there arent helicopters dropping some food/water onto the 10 freeway that people are walking on. (I know there would be some crowding etc...but put some armed guards on the chopper and keep it somewhat orderly and as long as there are multiple choppers coming and people knew their turn was coming...) Easy to criticize...I'm not there and I know it takes a couple of days, but it seems that we're far enough out that there should be a little better organization and humitarian support at this point.
Anyone caught stealing or waving guns around ought to be shot on sight-------the blame can be sorted out later.
That was a chilling report. Like Night of the Living Dead in N.O.
I saw that, it was absolutely heart wrenching.
Shep has been talking about the people are let off down the road with no instructions about where to go for help, lamenting that the baby was too hot because people there did not know where to go to get help.
Yet, how come Shep or one of his crew could not write out a handwritten sign and post it on the road down there giving information?
Wonder if it enters the reporters minds to take a little water, food packets to give out as they stand there all day talking about how bad off the people are.
Idiots - they do not help - they report.
Yup, grabbing food and water while wading your way out of that place is survival, pure and simple.
I think Smogger was pointing out the difference between the AFP and the AP's version of looting. Note the circled words..
Awesome job you are doing. Thanks for everything!
Jeff Goldblatt is reporting that some of the people wandering aound where he is have come from the Superdome because they don't ant to go to the Asrodome. Do they not realize that there is NOWHERE to go buy AWAY?
