President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

They look like people.... and little kids.
Chena, you are too kind. You try and sleep well tonight, and keep your prayers coming for our completely destitute fellow countrymen. He hears you clearly, I'm certain.
hehe, looking at those eyes that was my first thought.....He's baked!
if these guys hurt someone to get that bus, we're in a whole new realm of sick!
but watching this scene the last two days i'm still trying to decide if humanity is worth saving or not
Who knows at this point they could be lying, covering up clueless or just plain incompetent. Or they could be spot on in their estimations but damn if there is 250K still around that area I fear alot of them died already!
"I mean, the people in Houston have gone out of their way to offer hospitality."
With that, I fully agree. I think so highly of Texans and their "can do" abilities, perhaps I'm expecting more than was reasonable on the first day. :)
***A walking crime wave is about to hit the rest of this country.***
That is ABSOLUTELY true...
You'll notice the FENCE and armed guards around the AstroDome?
We'll count the blessings one at a time, starting with thanks that your brother and his wife are alive and safe. Keep the faith.
I saw the looters stole a USPS truck to get their loot around the city.
I didn't get to see the post...why was it pulled?
I'm with ya on that, I think.... Though I want to know the story.
Probably a little of everything from the Mayor and Governor -- cannot fathom having such louzy leadership during a disaster before and after.
CNN saying that the "renegade bus" occupants are going to be allowed refuge in the Astrodome.
They tried to force their way into Children's last night, too... and the libs (Colmes, Olberman, etc.), all think the looting, etc. if OKAY!!!!! looting is NEVER okay...
"I agree, that guy had obviously been through a highly, highly traumatic situation and was beyond exhausted . . ."
Well, yes. Hijacking a bus can probably be rather traumatic.
Did you notice how the guy rolled his eyes and evaded the reporter's questions about what it was like inside the SuperDome? I thought that was strange at the time. Now we know he COULDN'T answer because he wasn't even there!
Sigh. I suppose the buses that drove by him coming from the Superdome were actually amphibious submarines. I am beginning to understand why you find Shep's reporting today so riveting. You share his grasp of the obvious.
The people of Texas have been incredible.
Henry Clay & Magazine (streets?) - Children's Hospital - Shots fired, units close - other cops in the area "escorting ambulances" . . . jeez . . .
Excuse me? Some jumped off the bus and took off......good luck, Houston. Looks like you all just inherited some of NO's scum.
I said it before... they can't score drugs in NO... where do you think they would want to head?
