President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Weren't they picking up those on the I-10 ramp in school buses and also taking them to the Astrodome? Just where were those school buses taking the evacuees? Maybe they were originally going to the Superdome, and decided to bypass that quagmire and go directly to Houston?

I wouldn't want to be left in NO at night by myself -- no way when it was good weather.

and all of us need to realize we've very little information right now, and very few of us have any experience in this type of contingency planning.

Yes, very little information and a media bent on showing the failure of authorities. I just watched them interview one of the first evacuees to arrive in Houston. This is a disaster of untold proportions and the media is focusing on things like the last bath he had. Nevermind that he was provided a cot and fed in NO and now has been moved to safety. He hasn't had a bath.

That would be typical. New Orleans is run like an ogliarchy, and has been forever. The ruling ogliarchy is not necessarily the same as the elected officals.

My brother and his wife moved down to New Orleans a year ago to start their own business, and ever since then I've been worried about this kind of thing happening. They got out before the worst hit and drove to her mother's house in Houston. I'm glad that they're safe, but I worry about what the future will bring for them.

Sending my prayers to all FReepers and their families who are in the devastated areas.

CNN: Confirmed that this was a "renegade bus". It did not originate from the Superdome.

FReeper's family member needs help. Could you please ping your lists?

Freeper asking for help for New Orleans Police District 1

I usually don't do this, but a relative's life may be in immanent danger and I'm somewhat desperate. You've heard of the police precinct that is under siege by gang members. This is the New Orleans Police Department, District 1, N. Rampart St. in the French Quarter. My cousin's son is a police officer in this district, and is currently at the precinct building.

This info is from a phone conversation with his father earlier this evening. He assures me that to the best of his knowledge the following is accurate; and with his approval I'm posting it here.

This police precinct has been under attack by gang members for several days. At night, the gang stages assaults on the building. After several major firefights, the police are running dangerously low on food, water, and - worst of all - ammunition. Their manpower is decreased, too.

They expect an even larger gang attack tonight. So far, neither the police department nor the National Guard has been able to resupply them or send reinforcements. Unless they get them, the situation could turn very bad, very quickly.

Family calls to the authorities have been unsuccessful as of yet.

I'm asking any Freeper with contacts who might be able to help get them supplies - especially ammo - and either police or military reinforcements: Please call your contacts and ask them to help get this precinct resupplied and reinforced as soon as possible.

That's the New Orleans Police Department, District 1, on N. Rampart St. in the French Quarter.

Thank you.
Wampus SC

"The Salvation Army set up a large rescue center under I-10 at the Superdome. I don't have to flail because the facts are on my side. And I don't hate Shep. I just with he'd report the whole picture and not try to create the story."

Nope sorry you said that There was a Salvation army center Under the Bridge Shep was on. BTW The Road to the Super Dome that Shep was on went underwater before it got to the Super dome! The Pull back showed that numerous times you just engaged in what you accused Shep of doing. You made it sound like Shep was standing on top of a relief center. Shame on you, you publicity seeker!

Like the reporter says.... what about the people that came there earlier today and were turned away because they weren't coming from the superdome.
