FORT TOTTEN, N.D. - Members of the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe have voted to oppose the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

I am a lifetime Fighting Illini fan and find all of this PC garbage a pain. Is the wonderful group who gave us Ruth Bader-Ginsberg involved up to their little commie eyebrows in all this nit picky insanity?
The Suing Sioux?
North Dakota sports teams should change their name when Sioux City and Sioux Falls change theirs.
It would certainly be more accurate.
Does this mean they will have to change the name of the state
also?
Best joke I ever heard...
It's not that easy. UND was awarded a NCAA regional hockey final next season which could be revoked. Can you spell E-X-T-O-R-T-I-O-N!
Maybe they would like it better if they renamed them the "Fighting Cavalrymen".
Regarding Notre Dame and the Irish, there has been a long tradition to this name, with nary a peep from any organization which could speak on behalf of the Irish. At this time, Notre Dame has every right to use the name.
(I would say the same thing about other references to the ethnic heritages of our country, e.g., the Syracuse Orange and the University of Idaho Vandals.)
But, with regard to the name Fighting Sioux, the University of North Dakota got some kind of permission from the Spirit Lake Sioux to use the name, apparently in conjunction with promising something in return. Some members of the Tribe now want to call the deal off. They consider the name demeaning, or at least it's "demeaning" as long as the University doesn't come across with more money or other consideration.
Who would even want to deal with people like that?
There are many pro-American Indians in our country. They are among the most patriotic of our citizens. The percentage of their youth who serve in our military is very high. It is an honor to be associated with such people. But, with regard to those who have to be bribed into being associated with you, I wouldn't want to be associated with them.
I think the elders of the Spirit Lake Sioux should think very carefully about what their tribe may ask of the University of North Dakota, because they might get exactly what they want. We can, if they want, eradictate all un-American Indian names from our culture, and re-name things only after those people - original to this land or immigrant - who are proud to be associated with our country.
How about "The Whining Engines"?
Come to think of it, isn't the real name of that particular tribal group the "Lakota". Souix would be...French? I don't know. Anybody?
Fighting Suits........Lady Lawyers with an attitude.
Now, now...
Here in NY we have

And many of these towns have indian mascots. Lets just rename every town in NY. If we haven't wipe out the indians enough already this should finally remove all traces of their previous existance.
Continue the ethnic cleansing of aboriginal Americans from college sports. Now take the next step and revoke every scholarship given to an aborginal American athlete.
(If they don't want to have Indians honored then we won't recognize them at all.)
Now that's an idea!
When we lived there there was a joke about Herkimer, NY.
It went something like this:
Herkimer was the a**hole of NY state.
and Utica was 10 miles up it.
Well, if you lived there it was funny.
"It's not that easy. UND was awarded a NCAA regional hockey final next season which could be revoked. Can you spell E-X-T-O-R-T-I-O-N!"
I'm guessing the NCAA told UND about this from their HQ in INDIANapolis, INDIANa?
