Mayor: hundreds, maybe thousands, dead in New Orleans

Hundreds, maybe thousands, of people have died in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the city, Mayor C. Ray Nagin said Wednesday.

It will at least two or three months before the city has electricity. Restaurants won't be able to open; there won't be any commerce, he said during an impromptu news conference at the Hyatt Hotel.

"This is the real deal. It's not living conditions," he said.

Perhaps I am mistaken, or the news was, but I saw that they had buses to evacuate the citizens. They said at the time that those who remained did so by choice, refusing to leave. This is just horrible, but I am rather dismayed to see them now blame everyone else but themselves for staying.

That said; have any media wonks inquired about the 'disaster plan' that was prepared for New Orleans - what model they followed - or if they have shared it with anyone else. . .

I mean, the Mayor/city did have a 'diaster plan'. . .right?

We knew after 9/11; that Mayors are really important; and we should remember that as we vote.
