Excerpted from article:
"A group that supports the U.S. military is demanding an apology from Newsweek magazine's Eleanor Clift, who recently characterized America's armed forces as a "mercenary Army."
Her comments -- made this past weekend on the syndicated TV program "The McLaughlin Group" -- were "unfounded and grossly inappropriate," said the Freedom Alliance.
In an Aug. 30 letter to Clift, Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon asked her to retract her comment and apologize to the armed forces and their families.
Clift made the comment during a discussion about military recruiting efforts:
"But I think what we're coming to grips with is the fact that we actually have a mercenary Army," Clift said, according to a transcript of "The McLaughlin Group" program.
"And it doesn't have a nice ring to it. We call it 'volunteers,' but we're basically paying people to serve their country. And if you're going to pay people and have a mercenary Army, you're going to have to pay the market rate. And so the bounties are going up -- more money for tuition, higher enlistment bonuses -- and I think it's appropriate."

This latest blathering out of this Anti-American idiot goes beyond the pale. I know that Newsweak will not do the "right" thing in firing this moron, but they should!
In her case, I wouldn't interpret the "C" to stand for Clinton. :=)
Another ugly and bitter feminist. Good Lord. Does anything make these people smile?
You beat me to it....
"Another ugly and bitter feminist. Good Lord. Does anything make these people smile?"
When Lorena Bobitt castrated her hubby....that made them smile....oh it was a cheery day in feminazi land.
Maybe we could appease them by publicly castrating one man a day. Now if we only castrated those men who want to be a woman anyway...this could work out great for everyone!!
Does this dunce think that we shouldn't be paid for serving? We have bills, too.
I didn't see the show. Did her fellow panelists castigate her for this?
Gotta be quick around here. :=)
The Kaiser derided the British army as an "army of mercenaries," too.
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries
A.E. Housman
These in the day when heaven was falling
The hour when Earth's foundations fled
Followed their mercenary calling
Took their wages and are dead.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended
They stood, and Earth's foundations stay.
What God abandoned, these defended
And saved the sum of things for pay.
There is a less than attractive women in my building who has an anti-Bush sticker on her SUV. In the year I have worked here I have never once seen her smile. Not once!
Since she works for another company in the building and not for my company I have often been tempted to ask her "I have never seen you smile before. Are you liberals always pissed off and angry or is it just you?"
Does this dunce think that we shouldn't be paid for serving? We have bills, too.
Well, I think we should call her job what it is - paid propogandist.
Clift's an idiot. In decades past, even draftees were paid for serving.
She's even stupider than I previously thought, and I previously thought she was stupider than a paperclip.
I gave up on the "McLaughlin Group" years ago.
I don't know how Tony Blankley(if he's still on the show) stomachs it.
"Personally I have had nothing but contempt for Ms. Clift for as long as I can remember. Her constant "spinning" for Clinton during the impeachment..."
This is exactly when and why I stopped watching McLaughlin Group. Clift is the quintessential insufferable _______ (if I filled in the blank with what I'm thinking, I'd be banned.)
Does Eleanor accept money for what she does?
Clift is such a dour old broad, she and the editor of "The Nation" Katrina Vandervol. I don't think either smile much.
What is interesting about the ultra left women is they either act like these two, "The world is ending attitude" or they constantly chuckle and shake their heads when on a TV political talk show.
Based on her definition, isn't everybody who has a job a mercenary? What an ignorant thing to say.

"Does this dunce think that we shouldn't be paid for serving? We have bills, too."
I might be wrong, but I will bet my bottom dollar that Ms. Clift makes a hell of alot more money annually than your average everyday Colonel, not to mention your regular E-5 (any branch will do). On top of this, the most danger that she faces is getting a paper cut on her pinkie, if that.
