It is with heavy heart I write this...
I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.
He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.
The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.
The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.
More to follow....
Besides, what reporter is going to roll over on a source when it's guaranteed that source will be fired for divulging what they know. This story is going to be verified or not eventually. What possible motivation could a long time FReeper have for sticking their neck (and privileges) on the line for something they know is going to come out.
He posted breaking news. I didn't see anything else. However, Hugh Hewitt was incensed at this thread and has been carping about it today. No. I've never heard him.
So...MFH is a guy? Who knew.
I didn't until today. LOL
Surely that is a typo and they mean 10,000....
surely the CG guy messed up there....surely!
If 100,000...this would dwarf any disater in the history of the United States.
I think he will once the situation becomes more clear...right now was just the "something bad happened" speech....later will come the response speech, like 9/11.
At least I hope.
seems extremely high if you ask me. I am willing to consider several thousand....but 100,000..seems really, really high.
Exceedingly plausible, to me. Thanks.
billbears: Do you honestly believe the inept bureaucratic behemoth known as the federal government has either the capability or the skill to cover up thousands of people that just go missing? In this country?!?
And why would MFH tell us the source is his "best friend"?
If he wanted a loophole he could have could have made it less personal. Sheesh.
has any of this been verified? Any casualty numbers from miss yet?
I am rather disappointed in Hugh. When one sees the devastation, you have to know the toll is going to be tremendous. Why Hugh thinks this is fear mongering is beyond me. I wonder, did he show equal disgust at those blaming Bush for the entire suffering of all humankind?
Have long felt that our era long ago passed through
. . . the looking glass with Alice.
Why WILL NOT SEE seems to be such a cherished doctrine on the part of so many proud FREEPERS . . . is an interesting psychological/sociological question.
Wish I had definitive answers.
I'm sure it started out as civic minded bluster, but apparently his ego won't allow him to shut up when he's caught with his pants down.
This forum has a culture that he either doesn't know, or doesn't think relevant. In either case, he did his listeners a disservice with how our discussion was presented to them.
I sure remember those ancient FR days, months and I'm not sure my bleeding wounds are healed, yet!
Perhaps. He usually speaks highly of FR, so I am surprised.
Up yours, pal. Buh bye.
WooHoo!
"Then he painted a numeric "7" Which i translate as seven bodies in that house."
but, but.. joe Scarboro just said the paint on the sides of the buildings means theirs a gas leak or something. "And boy - it sure does smell down here".
I gues it's just in India and Indonesia that the dead bodies pile up and stink. In the good ole' U.S. of A. we only have gas leaks.
"has any of this been verified? Any casualty numbers from miss yet?"
Earlier today they had some coroner on the news. The reporter asked him "We understand that there have been at least 50 confirmed deaths in your city (or parish or whatever)."
The coronor said "50? That's false - I don't know who gave you that number but its false. I'm sure we'll have an increase in numbers - but 50 is wrong".
The way he said it made it seem like the number was much LESS than 50. But if you look at the actual words he used (or as best as i can recall) - he only says that the number 50 is wrong. From all the photos, etc. i have seen - I find it hard to imagine that the number of deaths would be way less than 50 for ANY size of area that a coroner would cover.
Another guy was talking in Biloxi (median income of $18,000) of how lots of folks that rented homes (and furniture) went to the owner of the furniture rental store to borrow $20. to fill up their gas tanks so they could get out of town before the storm. It didn't sound like the owner could help too many. He thought that if it hadn't been the end of the month (and paycheck) that more folks would have been able to leave and survive.
I've never had to live the paycheck to paycheck life thank God, but know good people who do (and have done). And usually it's a decesion of do you buy food or pay the electric bill. (And now is not the time to be critical of some of my friends' spending habits - although as a general warning - skip one of your monthly outings to movies to "get away from life's troubles" and put the cash in a jar so at least you can fill up the gas tank.
----"The "leaders" of NO have had 40 years of bickering about whether or not to protect NO against the possibility of a Cat 5 hurricane ...."----
I heard on the radio that Sidney Bumenthal (some guy under Clinton) has written a piece for tomorrow. I only recall vaguely the years, etc. - but it will say something like how in ~2001 there was a study to look at the levees in NO, and then in ~2002 it was given to the corp of engineers to study and in ~2003 Bush pulled the plug on it so the money could go to the war in Iraq. So - Bush DID cause this problem (according to Sydney). Like the Corp. could get anything done in 2 years - other than determine that they needed more money for another study.
