It is with heavy heart I write this...
I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.
He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.
The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.
The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.
More to follow....

The before and after high resolution shots of the area show extreme physical changes to the landscape.
nwctwx, do you know where I can view these? I just learned about Earth Google or Google Earth today but really haven't maneuvered around it. Is this where you see hi-res shots?

"Anyone know about conditions in Slidell?"I haven't heard anyone say more that 'Slidell is completely flooded', and it seems like no news - at times like this - is bad news.
It's good that some information is getting out, as bad as it is.

This is indeed sad news..Prayers for those who mourn.

I was hearing how they were delivering 500 generators and 200000 gallons of fuel to power up the cell sites...that is the first thing they are going to get up and running....sounds like your friends area already has some cell service...
without the cell service, its a news blackout....word of this will spread overnight..

The subtle signs have been there all day that this is really something unusually horrible. The surge covered such a large area, and went further inland than most seemed to expect. Most of the coast from Slidell to Biloxi is shattered buildings. Even in an extremely successfull evacuation, there would be a lot of people who didn't leave.

G*d be with us and give us courage. We are in a different place again...as we were after 9/11. Yea though we walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, WE WILL FEAR NO EVIL FOR THOU ART WITH US, Thy rod and Thy staff prepare us a way! We have a dreadful job of recovery and clean-up ahead, much as the people in Southeast Asia have had since Christmas just past. Our first priority then must be to save those we can save in this next week, while there's still time. There's another storm front moving in. It WON'T ever be the same again. It'll be different. But we will go on. As one lady in New Orleans standing in her green silk suit and with nothing left said: "We will ENDURE! Americans and people in this part of the world are good at that--ENDURING!" And your friends, and there are many, will stand beside you to help you. DO NOT BE AFRAID. WE ARE WITH YOU! SAVE THE LIVING! GOD BE WITH AND BLESS AMERICA IN HER HOUR OF NEED AND COMFORT US ALL AS WE CONFRONT THESE TERRIBLE SIGHTS AND SAVE THOSE WE CAN. BE WITH US AND HELP US COMFORT ONE ANOTHER. AMEN! F.D. in Canada

I don't know what would make people stay home when they were warned about the danger and told to evacuate.I could maybe understand a father staying home to watch the house and pets but no children should have stayed with him.I hope these numbers are wrong.

Everywhere except New Orleans (population 1,009,283 including suburbs), the worst has passed and we're in rescue/recovery mode. New Orleans is teetering on the brink of obliteration (based on the latest, I think the city still stands a chance). In Gulfport (urban population 205,754 in 2000), what's done is done. They got the same NWS bulletin

Talked to my cousin tonight who evacuated along with 7 other members of our family. Her place of work is gone. None of them have any clue if they have homes to go to. No word from their friends that stayed.
I'm probably going to send a check to HER so I know DIRECTLY where my money is going. She is a single/divorced mom trying to make ends meet. She's beside herself.
This REALLY is a nightmare come true.

Rest eternal grant them, gracious Lord.
And let light perpetual shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.

I'm using his ping list.
He is without power right now,
and it appears he won't have
it anytime real soon. Entergy
says it will take weeks to
restore it.

If indeed only 1/3rd evacuated from Biloxi, I'm afraid these numbers aren't wrong.
To: adam_az
Of course we should keep stocks of supplies at home - however, if we had been in that storm, our supplies could have been destroyed as probably their's were.
I'm sure they were prepared as best they could be - but you can not stand up to a massive storm.
May God be with all of them and their families and help rescuers be able to locate and save survivors. So very sad.
