It is with heavy heart I write this...
I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.
He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.
The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.
The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.
More to follow....

BurbankKarl put up a thread.
I never thought in this day and age, with all of our technology that such a death toll from a hurricane was possible in this country. It staggers the mind. Where did it all go so wrong?
I was hearing some of the shortwave traffic and suspect as much...they were talking about what towns have disappeared, etc.
Still people stuck in cars, houses, etc too
I am so sorry for your friend, he or she has to be undergoing terrific stress as the removal of so many is an emotional, rough task.
I wonder if this will be in our news tomorrow? I am just so sorry for the thousands who lost their lives and their surviving family members who probably are waiting right now to hear news of their loved ones.
This storm was beyond belief.
son just said it was on the crawler on the tv at work. Probably CNN.
"Don't forget the reporters claimed 20 or 30 thousand would be dead in the World Trade Center attack on 9/11."
Yes, and months and months later my friend who lived in New Orleans (thank goodness she lives in Maine now!) still thought that tens of thousands of people had died there. That miraculously dropping death toll just wasn't news outside of the NY area or the truly news addicted.
I feared but totally expected this. The death toll will reach many thousands, maybe tens of thousands. I feared this,
Remember when the tsunami hit a while back ... it was days before the numbers really started adding up ... I'm afraid the worst may not be over
"1 mile"?
One place had full cargo containers 2 miles from shore. :(
amen
Keep prayin' folks... hang in there, and realize that God has a reason for everything.

Here's a horrible thought, but we must think about it. What a time this would be for terrorists to strike. I believe there are large numbers of them here, and I think the may be prepared to hit.
here is the nhc track nearly 3 days before landfall showing a landfall in eastern la/western ms....any blame that the "focus" wasnt on mississippi is ridiculous.

Wasn't the official death toll from Andrew in Florida something like only 26?
No wonder the Governor said it was their tsunami.
I am also thinking of the heavy tragedies Pres. Bush has had while in office. Very heavy.
GoGov.com is also has stories on reports on large number of casulaties.
Exactly. I said the same just this evenng. Pay close attention to which countries do or do not offer assistance and what their comments on the situation are. Time for long memories...
myfavoriteheadache would not lie. Believe it.
Very sad and heart breaking...
God have mercy if this is just the prelude to a worsening series of stuff over the next few months.
As some have asserted.
