Governor: New Orleans Needs to Be Evacuated Tuesday, August 30, 2005
BATON ROUGE, La. With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco (search ) announced late Tuesday that people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers need to be evacuated.
"The situation is untenable," Blanco said during a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

Mindboggling NO didn't worry over the years as they sat back and watched the levys sink lower and lower. Heard all day that there's more water today rising and they had no idea where it was coming from. DUH, ever think it might be that all the rain dumped in the higher land ran down into that bowl, huh? It's amazing how hours before and weeks after a disaster, people get really stupid.
Blanco in particular looks to be in way over her head.
And its not a partisan issue: I live in Las Vegas who has a (very good) dem mayor, Oscar Goodman. I'd take good old Oscar G over a lot of republican leaders in a crisis like this.
What did you expect. Mayor Nagin is a political moron and Governor Blanco is a political hack. Neither has any experience in providing leadership under duress. They are just like all other Democrats, blowhards, lightweights and failures, but certainly not capable of effective action in trying times. Rudy Guillani, John McCain, GW Bush, Frank Keating, Jeb Bush they are not. The people of Louisiana that voted these buffoon Democrat scum into office are getting just what they voted for. But, don't fret people of New Orleans, FEMA. GW Bush, and the US Army Engineers will save your sorry butts.
You are asuming alot...like the waterways aren't strewn with debris...especially hidden debris...
"Send several cruise ships to the docks in New Orleans."
You're assuming, of course, that the docks are still there!
Too bad your waffling, indecisiveness is part of the reason you're in this mess now.
I hope you redeem yourself as much as you can, and help these people!
I agree, but your comment only complements my criticism of Nagin and Blanco, and doesn't undermine it.
Yeah....right....get the Pres. there RIGHT AWAY...../rolling eyes
My big brother who does computer graphics down in New Orleans, evacuated to Texas with his girlfriend on Sunday. I thank G-d he heeded the warnings (which is not like him). When I saw the man from Mississippi who lost his wife when his house ripped in half I wept for him. This is really terrible. Lets all continue to pray for the people on the Gulf.
The docks are still there. Look at the pictures.
"Heard all day that there's more water today rising and they had no idea where it was coming from. "
From the article:
"Because of two levees that broke Tuesday, the city was rapidly filling with water, the governor said."
A plan is one thing. Executing it with a big city population of the Big Easy is another. New Yorkers may be gruff, but there is a 'do your own thing" in many of the temperate cities that makes the exectuion even more difficult.
Nagin has been remarkably unimpressive and Blanco has a wide-eyed look of confusion that's better accustomed to a middle manager in a big firm being asked a question at a department meeting.
Much worse than first reported!
Where is G.W. Bush and why isn't he standing on a rescue vehicle in the middle of NO providing leadership and support? He is making the same mistake that his father made when Andrew hit Florida in 1992. He is setting himself up to be portrayed as yet another Nero. Either get out there, or deputize Guliani and get him in there. It seems like the mayor of No has vanished into oblivion, and the leadership void is just another aspect of the tragedy.
What are you smoking?????????
N O is being EVACUATED!
This may prove to be VASTLY more devasting than even 9/11, in terms of loss of life and property damage, and the resulting fallout in economic terms.
I don't know about that. Its pretty much ruined about every urban area where it has a stranglehold, like Detriot, etc.
