The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I've come to the conclusion that it's a "heart" problem not a "skin" problem. Just depends on knowing right from wrong & that is not a trait belonging to one's ethnicity. I also apologize for jumping to my own too-early-to-state conclusions.
Forty years ago, one each gas pump, there was a little window that showed how much the gas tax was. How many people today know that they pay more than $0.40 a gallon gas tax? They sure don't learn thatr at the pump.
Has anyone heard of any INTERNATIONAL EFFORTS to help with this disaster? The US was on the spot for the tsunami relief...yet criticized. We are always first helping with natural disasters world over. I haven't heard of anything coming from other countries yet. Has anyone?
That's criminal. If she dies without insulin, I hope they put that pharmacist away for life. She has maybe 3-4 days to survive without it. And death from DKA ain't pretty or fun.

Well, Both points are taken. The city, though, is going to be uninhabitable for months. The houses -- almost all of them -- are total losses. We are talking about billions to rebuild after up to six months of nobody being able to live in the city.
I have the same concerns about the river levy. But it also seems to me that many taller buildings with their foundations under water for months could also be compromised. It's just a godawful mess.
Thanks for the school information. Don't you think they could suspend the uniform rules for refugees? Looks like school started, August 16th. Like you said, the supplies were bought and now lost.
I'll see what I can come up with, however the school boards should have some compassion on these children and parents, who have lost everything.

You are right...people won't help forever, but people that want to help themselves will be given chances...
I just have my doubts about how many will take advantage...maybe the ones in the dome...they at least went to where they were told to go...
the looters and people out on the streets...dunno if they will "help themselves".
I don't mind helping financially or otherwise, but not indefinitely if the victims don't try to get jobs or make other arrangements, attend school, etc....
BUT, regardless, we will all be paying for a long time ---taxes, doncha know!

The two-week relaxation is totally insufficient, but it will buy time to explain the issue to the American public. And the relaxation can be extended. Let the enviros scream - the American people will witness first hand how extreme and ridiculous they are.
I am TV-challenged, but I hope that Bush and his team (ie, Chertoff et al) are taking control of this matter, because the LA officials are not up to the task.
CNN is receiving private e-mails from individual law enforcement saying the number of dead is "even higher than that".
I'm not trying to cheer you up; I'm telling you that when it's our turn, you're expected here to hold our hands. :-)
