The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I thought any water leaving NO had to be pumped ... I didn't know about any drains .....

***The River is flowing through "multiple breaches" into St. Bernard Parish, per the mayor.

St. Bernard Parish is overflowing into the Idustrial Canal, in an image which has been posted in this thread several times.

The Industrial Canal opens into the Lake.***

That would explain the photos from earlier today showing water flowing OUT of a neighborhood...

And why the water continues to RISE in NO...

There are no significant tides on a lake

It is not a fresh water lake. It is brackish, with tidal flow from the Gulf mixing with fresh water from a couple of smaller rivers. Think of it more as a shallow bay with a constricted mouth to the sea.

That's all it is. People need leaders in situations like this, and what the entire world has discovered over the last few days is something most in this state have always known: There aren't any to be found in the Louisiana political class, at any level. (Well, Bobby Jindal, but look what they did to him.) America was expecting to find a Rudy Giuliani at the helm here; were THEY ever disappointed! :)

Are Nagin and Blanco pathetic? Of course they are. Blanco's worse than pathetic; she doesn't have enough functioning brain cells to successfully run an electric can opener.

What they don't deserve, what nobody deserves, is to be blamed for the loss of human life in a city that was doomed long, long, long before they ever came on the scene. That's what many here have chosen to do, and that's disgusting. New Orleans is drowning tonight for the very simple reason that New Orleans IS what it IS. Where hurricanes are concerned, its problem is and always has been fundamentally different from that of any other major American city. Blaming Blanco and Nagin for not doing something to "fix" the threat of a doomsday hurricane is pretty much like John F. Kerry blaming Bush for not leaping to his feet and charging off to New York to personally pull people out of the WTC rubble. It's just a shame that so many people can't recognize their own absurdity.

The lake is normally controlled to 1 foot above sea level.

No tides.

The drain is from the lake to the gulf. Clearly, whatever the level of the lake will be the level of water in NO.

{{{{{Republic}}}}}} Happy to see you!!!

I couldn't believe what the gov was saying. Instead of being on Larry King she should have been taking care of business and getting those people out of that stinking Dome and to a place of safety.

Our President can't do everything for her. You might not have been dreaming, cause I wouldn't put it past Mary L to have complained about anything Bush did to try and help her state.

I really am worried about all those people in the Dome. It must stink like a sewer in there. yuk!!

Sometime before 5 pm Friday,, the governor issues a state of emergency for Louisiana

I suppose she was just kidding though. After all, nobody took this seriously, right? The following evacuations were just for fun as well.

"Diddle E. Squats?" I guess he should have told people to "Get OUT of the city" in an even more stern voice, and wagged a finger.

I honestly don't know what more you can do, as a city official, than tell people to leave.

Once it fills up (if the bilge pumps all fail), that's right.

Don't you think we should get those people out of there?

"Ah, but he did; it was the "It's gonna turn" plan."

Or the Kerry - I have a plan - plan. That's what I was thinking earlier. All the demos do is talk about working on a plan (secret plan), but do nothing.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco declared a state of emergency late Friday, making it easier to implement emergency procedures, including evacuations, if necessary.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he will make a decision about evacuations and other emergency procedures today about noon.

"I have no source for the following other than some idle hearsay, but, I had heard that the public transit buses were moved out of NO, during the height of the attempted evacuation process, empty, except for the driver."

Are you serious???? Do you think they were worried about damaged buses instead of people's lives?

We have friends you own a house there. I guess that the house has been destroyed but did the island itself get reclaimed by the water? Was the refinery there destroyed?

Sorry, I have heard very little info about the outer areas from NO.

I lived in Houma 3 yrs. & am familiar with many of them.....been down thru Cocadrie to GI many times. (have even been to Venice !!).

Only info I have read about GI, is that the 'eye' came ashore there, it is now split in two, & 3 (of 7) that stayed, had been rescued.

I fear the news will be much worse about this tragedy, as we get more reports from these outer areas of all these states.
