What hundreds of buses? Bus service stopped on Saturday. The rest of you ideological comments about the evils of liberalism, and that is why these folks are poor, and don't have car, and are not self sufficient, is all quite fascinating, but the word I would use for bringing it up now, would get me banned, so I will just say, the comment is what causes "conservatives" to sometimes get a bad name, due to those with diplomatic skills of the level that you exhibit.

While lake level may be sea level the river is higher than sea level. And if the industrial canal is breached which connects the river to the lake than it's possible that the river is now flowing in to St. Bernard and the lake at the same time.
It is only a matter of time before one of the numerous fires ignites the chemical mixture that is forming on top of the water too.
Watch the helicopter videos, the oil and gasoline that is fbeginning to form on top of the flood waters is quite obvious.
The only ones who've left so far seem to be the looters workin' the swing shift...

seems to me they can get them out and to hell with where they go,,bus them up out of the flood area and drop them off. The locals will help. When a place is on fire, you don't consider where you are going to take people, you get them out.

But, we are not the ones in trouble.
If big things were made the same way as small things, they would be prohibitively expensive and inefficient. Making pumps that could function in a flooded city would certainly have been possible (simplest method being to build a waterproof wall around the pumping station, and using a small pump to keep it dry).
The bigger question, though, is what would be the purpose of spending even $10,000/pump on such an improvement? If the pumps are able to withstand a moderate rise in water level, a flood beyond that would suggest one thing: a breached levee. And if that happens, it doesn't matter whether the pumps are working or not.
Simply put: once a levy is breached, there is no possible amount of pumping that will prevent the waters on both sides from reaching equilibrium. Even if one had enough pumps to remove a foot of water per minute (that's 720 times what the NO pumps could do if working) it wouldn't take very many days before the levees were letting through more than that.
Has anyone heard anything else about water in the Superdome?
Nobody seems to know how many people are in the Superdome. First it was 30k, then 10k.
This is an unbelievable disaster and no one is in charge.

LOL. Poor Shep. I think he's in shock. I thought I heard he is from that area (Miss?), it must be even more devastating to watch the ocean swallow it up. Even knowing it was built below sea level and this was a possibility. His kooky comments are endearing in a way.

Yet more incompetence, how the hell would anyone let this happen? There should have been a months fuel available for pumps that were impervious to water, behind levees 30% higher that necessary. But the libs who run the show just want to create more dependence by giving unlimited handouts, rahter than protecting the city as they should. Typical.
